Amazon’s ‘God Of War’ TV Series Brings On Ronald D. Moore As New Showrunner

According to Variety Amazon’s highly anticipated God Of War TV series has found a new leader in acclaimed writer and producer Ronald D. Moore (Electric Dreams, Chaos On The Bridge, Relics). Moore, known for his work on major franchises like Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, will serve as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the upcoming adaptation of the popular video game. This development follows the departure of original showrunner Rafe Judkins (The Wheel Of Time, Uncharted), who exited alongside fellow executive producers Hawk Ostby (First Snow, Children Of Men, The Last Vermeer) and Mark Fergus (Tales From The Script, Maximum Ride).

The change in leadership marks a significant shift in the series’ creative direction. According to Variety, Judkins and his team had completed multiple scripts for the project, but Amazon and Sony Pictures Television opted to pursue a different vision. Moore’s addition signals a new approach as the show progresses in its development under Amazon Prime Video and Sony Pictures Television.

Also mentioned by Variety, Moore’s return to Sony Pictures Television comes after a stint with Disney and 20th Television. During his earlier tenure with Sony, Moore delivered several hit series, including Outlander’s long-running success and critically acclaimed For All Mankind. He has extensive experience in genre storytelling, having contributed significantly to the Star Trek franchise and earning widespread recognition for his work on Battlestar Galactica. An Outlander prequel and a For All Mankindspinoff are also in the works under his creative leadership.

God of War was officially ordered to series in 2022 by Amazon Prime Video. The series is based on the hit 2018 video game developed by Santa Monica Studio. It follows Kratos, the God of War, as he embarks on a perilous journey with his estranged son Atreus to fulfill his late wife’s final wish. Together, they face mythical creatures, gods, and personal challenges that threaten to unravel their fragile bond.

According to Variety, Cory Barlog (God Of War II, X-Men: Next Dimension), the game’s creative director, will stay on as an executive producer, alongside Asad Qizilbash (The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, Uncharted) and Carter Swan (Gran Turismo, Days Gone, The Last Of Us) from PlayStation Productions, Hermen Hulst from Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Vertigo’s Roy Lee (Death Note, Barbarian, The Long Walk). Jeff Ketcham of Santa Monica Studio also joins as a co-executive producer.

With Moore at the helm, fans of the game can expect the God of War series to feature a compelling narrative filled with epic battles and emotional depth, hallmarks of both Moore’s work and the beloved game.
