Amazon Video has pulled the plug on one of its original series. According to TVLine, espionage thriller Absentia will not be renewed for a fourth season. The series star and executive producer, Stana Katic (Castle, Justice Society: World War 2) announced the cancellation on Twitter Friday. See the post from her Twitter account below:
TVLine reports Katic thanked the cast, crew, and viewers in a post that reassured fans the series “was always meant to be only three seasons.” Katic went on and described how she “never have imagined the creative partnerships and the friendships that would form and enrich my life. Three seasons was the perfect amount of space for a beautiful, complicated and wonderfully fulfilling journey.”
Absentia was created by Matt Cirulnick (Rambo: Last Blood, Earp: Saints for Sinners) and focused on Katic’s Emily Byrne, an FBI agent declared deceased after a foreign mission goes awry. Six years later, Byrne reappears seeking to reclaim her life and innocence as she has been framed for a series of murders. The series also starred Patrick Heusinger (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Quantum Break) as Emily’s ex-husband, Special Agent Nick Durand; Cara Theobold (Zomboat, Crazyhead) as Nick’s current wife, Alice; and, Neil Jackson (The Passage, Make It or Break It) as Emily’s older stepbrother, Jack.
According to TVLine, the third season premiered in July of last year. The ten-episode installment found Byrne coming out of the shadows to rescue former husband Nick. In her pursuit, she uncovered a larger conspiracy. Katic explained how the Absentia team had contemplated continuing this development for another season.
Premiering in September of 2017, Absentia was Katic’s first role after ABC’s Castle, according to TVLine. For eight seasons, Katic played detective Kate Beckett opposite Nathan Fillion’s (The Rookie, Firefly) Richard Castle in the opposites-attract cop series.
