Amazon Will Air The Final Season of ‘Vikings’ Ahead of The History Channel

The long-running History Channel drama series, Vikings, will release its final ten episodes of its run on Amazon Prime Video prior to being aired on the History Channel, according to Deadline. The sixth and final season of the historical drama series premiered its first half consisting of ten episodes on History Channel from late 2019 to early 2020. The last ten episodes of the sixth season will air on December 30 for the Amazon streaming service before moving over to the History Channel after the first run of the episodes.

Vikings is a historical drama series that was created by Michael Hirst (The Tudors) that first premiered in 2013 for the History Channel. The series centers on the trials and tribulations of the Norseman in medieval times, particularly centering on Ragnar Lothbrok and the battles that follow him, his people, and ancestors. The series’ cast includes the likes of Travis Fimmel (Raised by Wolves) as Lothbrok in addition to Clive Standen (Camelot, Doctor Who), Katheryn Winnick (Amusement, Bones), Alexander Ludwig (Lone Survivor, The Hunger Games), Gustaf Skarsgård (The Way Back, Westworld), John Kavanagh (Braveheart), Peter Franzén (Ambush), and many more.

The news of the move for the final season of Vikings follows the reveal that a spin-off series has been put into production at Netflix. The spin-off series, entitled Vikings: Valhalla, has begun its first season production in Ireland for the streaming giant.

Amazon Prime Video currently has streaming rights to the first five and half seasons of the History Channel drama series. Via Deadline, “Prime Video will uniquely expose the series finale to a streaming audience first. Prepare to be astonished, and for many surprises along the way. And if you have tears to shed, then also be prepared to shed them,” said creator Hirst.
