Amazon Orders Reboot Series ‘A League Of Their Own’

Amazon Studios has partnered with Sony Pictures Television to pick up series A League Of Their Own,  a modern take on Penny Marshall’s 1992 film, according to Deadline. The series surrounds the stories of women pining to play baseball at the professional level through the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, during World War II. It was co-created by Will Graham (Movie 43) and Abbi Jacobson (Broad City).

“28 years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked. We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else. Three years ago, we approached Sony with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories. With the help of an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast, and the devoted support of Amazon to this project, we feel beyond lucky and excited to get to bring these characters to life.” said Graham and Jacobson via Deadline. “It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humor for these players to achieve their dreams. We’re hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities.”

Jacobson will also star in the series, along with Chanté Adams (Roxanne Roxanne), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Brain In Gear), Kelly McCormack (A Simple Favor), Roberta Colindrez (Girls), and Priscilla Delgado (Julieta). Molly Ephraim (The Front Runner), Kate Berlant (Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood) and Melanie Field (Heathers) will regularly make guest appearances.

“Will and Abbi have taken a classic movie, reimagining it for a new generation with new characters and their own fresh, modern vision on a timeless story of big dreams, friendship, love, and, of course, baseball,” aid Vernon Sanders, Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios via Deadline. “We’re so excited to partner with Sony to bring this emotional, exciting new series to our Prime Video customers around the world.”

Along with Sony and Amazon, Field Trip Productions is associated with the project. Elizabeth Koe is co-executive producer, with Jamie Babbit as executive producer and director of the pilot. Graham and Jacobson executive produce through Field Trip’s Hailey Wierengo.

There is no word on when A League of Their Own will be available to stream.
