Amazon MGM Studios to Adapt TV Series of Coveted Makeup Brand, ‘Glossier’

The newly released novel by author and journalist Marisa Meltzer about Glossier, the Gen Z-dominated beauty brand, may lead to an Amazon series. Amazon MGM Studios has won the rights to the novel entitled Glossy in an IP bidding war, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The novel follows the female founder of Glossier, Emily Weiss.

The exposé instantly became a New York Times bestseller after its release in September. Multiple sources have stated that Pet Semetary’s Lindsey Anderson Beer and her production company, LAB Brew, could be producing the anticipated ongoing series.

Glossy delves into the beauty brand that has generated a cult-like following with popular and uniquely named cosmetic items such as Boy Brow and Balm dotcom. The brand has changed the way that beauty companies interact and sell to Gen Z and millennial demographics.

At one point, the brand had a net worth of 1.2 billion. Some have commented on this as  “Glossier Mania.”

Weiss, the former CEO of Glossier, got her start on Teen Vogue as a “superintern” and was also on the show The Hills. With connections to Weiss, investors and former employees, Meltzer questions whether or not Weiss was the only one responsible for Glossier’s success.

The New York Times Book Review stated that the 300-page novel is “a compulsively readable narrative of beauty, business, privilege, and mogul-dom.” Also, the publisher of Glossy, Simon & Schuster, has said the novel is “The Devil Wears Prada for the Bad Blood generation.”

With no current showrunner and Hollywood’s many strikes, this has led to a freeze in production, which has left the industry with little to nothing to sell. This could lead to a surplus in larger IP markets.

LAB Brew has made many influential writers, directors and actors. The production company has generated successful projects from film to TV. Some titles include the Paramount Pictures film Sleepy Hollow and Searching for Susie Thunder, a retelling of the 1980s hacker.

Beer, who has also worked on Paramount’s Transformers: The Last Knight and Sony’s Masters of the Universe, will take the executive producer reins on this project alongside Alexandra Banks (Oculus, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser) and Spencer Walken (Vacation Friends, Sleepy Hollow.)
