Amazon Exec Talks Potential ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Spinoffs & YA Strategy

Deadline has reported that season two of Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty the second most viewed series on the platform among women ages 18-34, according to Prime Video. Season two debuted on July 14 and the series has already been renewed for season three.

In an interview with Deadline, head of television, Amazon and MGM Studios Vernon Sanders (The Enemy Within, Harry’s Law) discussed the programming strategy behind The Summer I Turned Pretty and young adult content on Prime Video.

“It had been one of our goals for years to have that defining show for that audience,” Sanders said to Deadline. “So we’re just over the moon…This show is going to continue to be a huge centerpiece for us, and we absolutely have plans to continue building it. Jenny’s got great vision for where she wants to go with all of it, but we’re already hard at work developing complementary pieces.”

When asked by Deadline how Amazon Studios positioned it as a flagship series for Prime video, Sanders explained, “For that, I have to give so much credit to our PR team and our marketing team for working so closely with Jenny and honestly our whole our music team,”

He continued, “Music for that show is so key, as you know, and the success we’ve had both seasons partnering with Taylor Swift and her team and so many music artists. There’s a pre-existing book series. There are just so many different elements that all worked really closely together over the course of launching Season 2.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty first premiered on Prime Video on June 17, 2022 and stars Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Made in Hollywood), Gavin Casalegno (The Vampire Diaries, Walker), Christopher Briney (Daliland, Under the Covers), Sean Kaufman (Manifest, Happy Baby), Rachel Blanchard (You Me Her, Clueless), and Jackie Chung (Station 19, Someone Else).
