After two seasons, The Tick has been canceled despite its impressive 4.3/5 star rating on Amazon.
The Tick starred Peter Serafincowicz in the titular role, a powerless accountant who decides to take matters into his own hands when he comes to the realization that his city is being run by a super villain, fittingly named “The Terror” (Jackie Earle Haley). Serafincowicz’s character is abetted by his similarly powerless friend Arthur Everest (Griffin Newman), who dresses in a moth-like suit. The Tick also starred Valorie Curry, Brendan Hines, Scott Speiser, and Yara Martinez.
News of its cancellation broke by way of Twitter, according to Variety. “I’m sorry to say Amazon has chosen not to proceed with [‘The Tick’],” series creator Ben Edlund tweeted. “I’m not sorry to say I love this show, its cast, its story, and its message. Destiny demands that my compatriots and I now seek a new home for this series.”
Edlund was The Tick’s executive producer, and also created the series’ origin material, a comic book known by the same name.
In wake of its cancelation, Newman maintains that the popular superhero comedy lives on. The actor tweeted the following on Thursday: “Our show is very much still alive at this moment! We’re all still under contract, and actively trying to find a new place to keep the show going! Fan demand is really what has the power to push us over the edge right now, so please be loud! It’s time to #SaveTheTick!”
This news breaks only six weeks after the premiere of its second season, which faired extremely well critically. While the first season earned a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, its second scored a 100%. Amazon has not released its viewership numbers, like many other online platforms.
Amazon has also recently cancelled comedy Catastrophe and is scheduled to end The Man in the High Castle. According to Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, like The Tick, her show is unlikely to live beyond its second season.
