Prime video has assembled its main cast for its new series called Barbershop. According to Deadline, the series is said to be an adaptation of the MGM Barbershop movie back in 2002.
The series will follow a character named Travis Porter who wishes to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and become a barber. Deadline mentions, the iconic “Calvin’s” Barbershop will be filled with new barbers, however the shop will remain lively and the customers will be argumentative and the fades will be the dopest in the city because at Calvin’s, the community comes together for more than just a haircut.
Variety noted that Jermaine Fowler (Crutch, Only Murders In The Building) will play the main character, Travis “Trav” Porter Roy Wood Jr. (I Hate My Love Life, Love, Brooklyn) will play Robert, an ex-convict turned barber, Punkie Johnson (Roofman, The Chi) will play Stella, Brett Gray (The Chi, Star Trek: Prodigy) will play Kofi, and E.J. Bonilla (In Our Blood, Chicago P.D.) will play Fernan.
Deadline noted, that the series will be written and executive produced by Marshall Todd (Woke, Barbershop), who was also a co-writer of the original Barbershop movie. Max Searle (Dave, Based On A True Story), will not only be an executive producer but will also be a show runner along with, Kevin Hart (Good Sports, Xeno), Bryan Smiley (Xeno, LOL Live With Chico Bean), and Mike Stein (Lil Kev, Good Sports).
The main actors Wood Jr. and Johnson are not lightweights when it comes to this project. According to Deadline, Wood Jr. was comedian and Emmy-nominated producer for a PBS documentary called The Neutral Ground and is best known for his eight years as a correspondent on The Daily Show from 2013-2023. As for Johnson, he was known for her four season run as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. Before her time on SNL, she starred on season two of HBO Max’s Love Life.
There has been no release date mentioned for the series, so we will have to keep an eye out for any teasers for this upcoming adaptation.
