According to Deadline, Goosebumps will not be coming back to Disney+ for a third season. The R.L. Stine (The Prom Queen, The Haunted Mask) book series adaptation has been canceled after two seasons.
A source told Deadline that Sony Pictures Television is planning on exploring some different creative directions for the IP, and it might shop the series to other outlets.
In terms of ratings, the series has done really well, with 43 million viewed hours for Seasons one and two across 16 international markets, in addition to the 75 million hours watched in the U.S. since its debut, Deadline adds.
Deadline states that the series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, coming from Disney Branded Television, and based on R.L Stine’s bestselling Scholastic series. Each Goosebumps season had a different story, cast, and setting. Season Two featured teenage siblings who discover a new threat and lead the way to a series of events that give light to a complex mystery. They find themselves caught in an unsettling tale of four teenagers who suddenly disappeared in 1994.
The series regular cast of Season Two was made up of Ana Ortiz (Devious Maids, Ugly Betty), playing Jen, Elijah M. Cooper (Line of Duty, Almost Popular), as CJ, Jayden Bartels (Side Hustle, To The Beat!), as Cece, David Schwimmer (Friends, Madagascar), playing Anthony, Galilea La Salvia (Talia in the Kitchen, Every Witch Way), as Frankie, Sam McCarthy (Dead to Me, 18 to Party), as Devin, and Francesca Noel (Then Came You, Pools), as Alex. Deadline reports that the Season One cast included Rachel Harris (Lucifer, The Hangover), Ana Yi Puig (Jade Armor, Senior Year), Isa Briones (The Pitt, Takers), Justin Long (Tusk, Alvin and the Chipmunks), Will Price (Brave the Dark, A Complete Unknown), Miles McKenna (Guilty Party, All Night), and Zack Morris (EastEnders, The Bluff), Deadline notes.
The series was developed by Rob Letterman (Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Shark Tale) and Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets, Neighbors). They served as executive producers, alongside showrunner Neal H. Moritz (Fast & Furious franchise, S.W.A.T), Pavun Shetty (The Boys, Gen V), Erin O’Malley (New Girl, The Crossover), Hilary Winston (Community, My Name Is Earl), Conor Welch (Platonic, Incoming), and Scholastic Entertainment’s Iole Lucchese (Clifford the Big Red Dog, Caster) and Caitlin Friedman (Stillwater, Eva the Owlet), Deadline mentions.
Variety first reported the cancellation, according to Deadline.
