Adult Swim Drops ‘Rick and Morty’ Co-Creator Justin Roiland After Domestic Abuse Charges

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Adult Swim has cut ties with Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland (Solar Opposites, Koala Man) in light of the recent news that he has been charged with felony domestic abuse in Orange County. Adult Swim/ Cartoon Network/ Boomerang Senior VP of Communications Marie Moore informed news outlets in statement yesterday that “Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland.” More information on the subject, check out our article here.

This comes at a bad time for Adult Swim, which distributes Rick and Morty, as according to the Hollywood Reporter, the adult-oriented nighttime cable channel isn’t even halfway through their giant seventy episode order for the show, which was commissioned all the way back in 2018. Roiland was both a co-creator and executive producer for the show, as well the voice actor for the titular characters of Rick and Morty.

As the Hollywood Reporter writes, Rick and Morty will still continue without Roiland, who’s voice roles are set to be recast, although he will purportedly always be credited as co-creator. Roiland also had several ongoing projects with Hulu, such as Solar Opposites and Koala Man, though according to Deadline, the streaming conglomerate has also recently decided to cut ties with Roiland and will be recasting his voice roles for the other series.

News of Roiland’s charges broke out on January 12 by NBC News, who announced that the now disgraced creator was charged with one count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, or deceit in Orange County based on an alleged 2020 report with an unnamed Jane Doe who Roiland was dating at the time. Roiland pled not guilty and was released that same year on a $50,000 bond.

Several pretrial hearings have already occurred, and Roiland is expected to return to court on April 27.
