HBO’s mystery crime drama has officially casted it’s lead actors for the new upcoming season. Season five of True Detective will star lead actor Nicholas Cage (Ghost Rider, National Treasure) and lead actor Antonio Banderas (Spy Kids, The Mask of Zorro) according to Deadline.
True Detective is an anthology series that features a new cast and a new mystery to solve each season. The most recent season, Night Country, featuring lead actress Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs, Maverick) and actress Kali Reis (Mercy, Catch the Fair One), was the most-watched season, with over 10 million views averaging per episode.
Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid, Ladies’ Night) has been credited to be the official showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer for the new season of True Detective, as she also was the showrunner for last season. Set to also be executive producers for season five of the show are Cage, Banderas, Kathleen McCaffrey (The Shards, Industry), Cary Joji Fukunaga (No Time to Die, Sin Nombre), Mari Jo Winkler (Y: The Last Man, Vinyl), Daniel Zelman (Damages, Bloodline), Nic Pizzolatto (Galveston, The Guilty), Steve Golin (Mr. Robot, 13 Reasons Why), and Richard Brown (Kings Court, Catch-22).
Actor Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar) and actor Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, Now You See Me) will also serve as executive producers for season five of the show, as they were the lead duo in the first season of the series. Fukunaga had directed the first season, with Pizzolatto credited as the writer. Pizzolatto is the series creator of True Detective. The team managed to score multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for season one of the show.
True Detective was renewed for the fifth season back in 2024. Season five of the show will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. Cage will be playing as Henry Logan, and Banderas will be playing as Rai Garcia.
Cage was recently in the news regarding his comments on an AI waiver Amazon had asked him to sign during production of Prime Video’s Spider Noir, which was recently announced as cancelled after the first season. Cage played the lead role in the series as Ben Reilly, The Spider. Cage had spoken up about his issue with AI and the studio during his celebrity Spotlight panel on the Empire Stage of New York City’s Comic Con.
True Detective has four seasons of the show, with a total of 30 episodes that currently available to stream now on HBO Max. Fans can catch up on the series before the new season comes out.
Production and filming for season five of True Detective will begin in 2027.
