ABC Renews ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for its Fifteenth Season

It has become official, ABC has renewed Grey’s Anatomy for season 15. The medical drama will have its place in ABC’s history books by being the network’s longest-running primetime scripted series. Lasting longer than the 1952 sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett, which had a 14 seasons. According to Deadline, the renewal for Grey’s Anatomy was announced to the cast and crew during the show’s season 14 wrap party.

The show was expected to have a 15th season with Grey’s Anatomy star, Ellen Pompeo, having sign a two-year deal. However, there are going to be changes to the cast in the show. Both Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew are leaving the series at the end of the 14th season. The rest of the series’ regulars will be returning the the show.

Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, said, “Grey’s Anatomy has a special place in my heart and millions of viewers feel the same way. Thanks to fiercely loyal fans who have been on this journey since the beginning, and new generations of viewers who continue to discover the joy and drama of Grey Sloan Memorial, the show is as strong as ever.”

Even after 14 seasons, Grey’s Anatomy is still a ratings powerhouse. The show is the number one drama in adult 18-49 and is also tied with ABC’s The Good Doctor as the number two broadcast drama on television. It is also up 3% in total viewers making for the show’s most watched season since 2013-14.

Grey’s Anatomy follows the main character Meredith Grey (Pompeo) and the team of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial. They are faced with life-or-death decisions every single day. They look to each other for comfort, and, for some of the characters, more than just a friendship. As a team they learn that both medicine and relationships cannot be defined something as simple as black and white.

Shonda Rhimes (creator of the series) has said that, “as long as Ellen wants to do it.”
