ABC has officially ordered a new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff series set in rural Texas. According to Deadline, the untitled medical drama will be co-created by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Bridgerton, Scandal) and current Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis (Grey’s Anatomy). The series received a straight-to-series order from ABC and is expected to premiere during the network’s midseason 2027 schedule.
The upcoming project will become the fourth series in the Grey’s Anatomy franchise, following Private Practice and Station 19. Private Practice starred Kate Walsh (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, 13 Reasons Why, After the Sunset), while Station 19 starred Jason Winston George (Sunset Beach, Kidnap, Breaking In). Both Walsh and George originated from Grey’s Anatomy before leading their own spinoff series. Unlike previous installments in the franchise, the new series will reportedly take place in a rural West Texas medical center described as the “last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”
The spinoff will also reportedly be the first Grey’s Anatomy offshoot not centered around an existing series regular from the original show. Previous spinoffs focused on characters including Walsh’s Addison Montgomery in Private Practice and George’s Ben Warren in Station 19.
In a statement shared with Deadline, Marinis expressed excitement about expanding the Grey’s Anatomy universe while introducing new characters and storylines inspired by her home state of Texas. The writer, who is originally from Houston and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, has spent nearly two decades working on Grey’s Anatomy. She began as a writer’s assistant before eventually becoming the showrunner and executive producer of the show.
Ellen Pompeo (Good American Family, Old School, Moonlight Mile) will executive produce the new series alongside Rhimes, Marinis, and Betsy Beers (Grey’s Anatomy, Bridgerton, Scandal). The series will be produced by Shondaland and 20th Television.
Deadline also reported that the spinoff may eventually connect to the main Grey’s Anatomy storyline through one or more existing characters, with Debbie Allen’s (Fame, Amistad, A Different World) character Catherine Fox reportedly being considered as a possible connection point between the two series.
The new spinoff continues ABC’s recent expansion of several of its long-running television franchises, including 9-1-1, The Rookie, and Grey’s Anatomy.
