According to The Hollywood Reporter, the long-running hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has just been renewed for its 21st season at ABC. The new season will be the first one with new showrunner Meg Marinis (Grey’s Anatomy: Come Rain or Shine). Marinis took over as showrunner at the end of season 19 for Krista Vernoff (Shameless).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marinis has been with the series since its third season. She has worked her way up from a writer’s production assistant. Afterward, she worked as a writers’ assistant and medical researcher and then became an executive producer on the series. She has been there throughout the majority of the journey of the series.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, creator Shonda Rhimes (Private Practice) said, “The loyalty and love of Grey’s Anatomy fans has propelled us into a historic 21st season, and I could not be more grateful. Meg Marinis’ storytelling is a gift that continues to keep the show vibrant, compelling, and alive, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for next season.”
Grey’s Anatomy is currently the longest-running medical drama in television history. The series started its journey back in 2005 and has accumulated a huge fandom. The series focuses on a group of young doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, who began their careers at the facility as interns.
Currently, there has been no word on any returning cast members for the new season. The cast for the series has included Ellen Pompeo (Station 19), Chandra Wilson (Lone Star), James Pickens, Jr. (42), Kevin McKidd (Dog Soldier), Caterina Scorsone (The November Man), Camilla Luddington (Shadow of the Tomb Raider), Kelly McCreary (White Collar), Kim Raver (Night at the Museum), Jake Borelli (The Thing About Harry), Chris Carmack (The O.C.), Anthony Hill (Future Man), Alexis Floyd (Inventing Anna), Harry Shum Jr. (Shadowhunters), Adelaide Kane (The Purge), Midori Francis (Good Boys), and Niko Terho (Sno Babies).
