A Twisty Teaser for Netflix’s ‘Jessica Jones’

Netflix released a teaser trailer today for Jessica Jones, the upcoming series which will be the second of four original shows set in the Marvel universe. The trailer gives very little information about the story but is instead imbued with overlapping images passing from light to dark. A suburban street corner, camera lens, spilled drink, the door of Alias Investigations, a conflict, a stormy sky; none of these tell us what to expect aside from the same gritty, well-produced show we got with last spring’s Daredevil, which wowed fans overnight. Check out the trailer for yourself, but don’t look away, it’s less than a minute long:

With superheroes continuing their pop culture domination Netflix made a savvy deal with this Marvel slate. Daredevil, Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will be limited run shows introducing us to these lesser-known inhabitants of the Marvel universe. One we’re familiar a fifth show will pull the characters together as the Defenders, one of Marvel’s many street-level superhero teams. There will be some crossover between the shows, thus far we know Luke Cage will show up in Jessica Jones and the character Claire Temple, played by Rosario Dawson in Daredevil, will reappear in Luke Cage.

Colter and Ritter filming ‘Jessica Jones’

As Marvel characters go Jessica Jones is a young creation. First published in 2001, as part of Marvel’s adult-oriented imprint Marvel Max (Look! Comic characters curse and have sex!), Jones’ many appearances across a variety of series have given her a rich backstory. A contemporary of Peter Parker and Johnny Storm (she crushed on both in high school) she received powers in the same radiation accident that created Spiderman. After an accident killed her parents and placed her in a coma she awoke to discover her powers, but struggled with them and her place in the MCU throughout her life. And she’s a brainy chick as well as a badass. Her work with Alias Investigations hints that this show will give us as much intrigue and suspense as action and adventure. By no means does the show have to stick to her printed story, but even if they chose to do a faithful adaptation they have a deep story to mine.

Tennant and Ritter on the set of ‘Jessica Jones’

Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad, Don’t Trust the B— in Apt 23) will play Jessica and we know we’ll see at least one villain who played a major role in her life. David Tennant has been cast as Purple Man, who kidnapped and brainwashed the young superheroine. The experience directly led to her career as an investigator.  Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix, Vegas), Rachel Taylor (Grey’s Anatomy), and Mike Colter (Luke Cage himself) will also star,

The show will premiere with its full run of 13 episodes on November 20.
