Carrie Bradshaw and her laptop may be returning to a streaming platform near you. According to TVLine, a revival of HBO’s late 90s series Sex in the City is rumored to be in the works at HBO Max. Created by Darren Star (Younger, Emily in Paris), the series ran for six seasons and followed the love lives of four female friends in New York City.
Based on the book by Candace Bushnell (One Fifth Avenue, Four Blondes), the series starred Sarah Jessica Parker (Divorce, Hocus Pocus) as Carrie, a columnist who focused on women’s sex lives in the Big Apple. Parker’s co-stars included Cynthia Nixon (Ratched, Hannibal) as the rational Miranda; Kristin Davis (Deck the Halls, Holiday in the Wild) as traditionalist Charlotte; and, Kim Cattrall (Filthy Rich, Police Academy) as the adventurous Samantha.
According to TVLine, the revival is reportedly aimed to be a limited series with three of the foursome. Cattrall will not be returning to the show. As far back as 2017, Cattrall has made public that her time with the franchise and that character was over. From interviews regarding her relationship with the co-stars to a public feud with Parker about the canceled third film, Cattrall has made it a goal to move on.
“It’s a no from me,” Cattrall said in a 2019 The Daily Mail interview, via Stylechaser. “You learn lessons in life and my lesson is to do work with good people and try and make it fun,” she stated in the interview. She has even suggested they recast the role.
“I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it. And another actress should play it,” Cattrall said in a 2017 interview with Piers Morgan, via TVLine. “Maybe they could make it an African-American Samantha Jones, or Hispanic Samantha Jones,” Cattrall said via TVLine. Ironically, the series has since been critiqued for its lack of on-screen diversity.
Since the series’ end in 2004, it spawned two films and a prequel series. Sex and the City and Sex and the City 2 were released in 2008 and 2010, respectively. In 2013, The CW aired The Carrie Diaries which followed teen Carrie as a junior in high school. It ran for two seasons.
