A ‘Clone Wars’ Revival For Disney+

Some belated news from the D23 Expo, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is being resurrected for a seventh season. The animated series originally ran from 2008-2014 on Cartoon Network. But when Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney the show was unceremoniously cancelled. The revival is set to run on Disney+ with a planned release date of February 2020.

The original series featured the adventures of a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Anakin’s Padawan apprentice Ahsoka Tano. In the Star Wars canon, The Clone Wars takes place between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. When the series was cancelled many stories were left open-ended, while some were picked up in the sequel series Star Wars Rebels, which aired on Disney XD from 2014-2018, and takes place closer to Episode IV: A New Hope. Characters from Clone Wars including Ahsoka and Anakin, as Darth Vader, feature in Rebels

The initial renewal announcement came during the show’s 10th anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018. The season is set to have twelve episodes and is set to tie Clone Wars and Rebels together. The mid-winter release date for the series came amid other Star Wars news at D23 including the live-action The Mandalorian due out in November 2019. There is also an Untitled Cassian Andor Series and an Untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi Series in the works.

Disney+ is set to launch on November 12, 2019 with streaming plans starting at $7 per month. It was also recently revealed that Disney+ will be releasing episodes on a weekly basis as opposed to dropping full seasons all at once.

The first Star Wars original to premiere on Disney+ will be The Mandalorian which will drop the same day as the streaming platform’s launch. The Clone Wars is set to drop in February 2020.
