90s Teen Film ‘Cruel Intentions’ Set for Another TV Adaptation at IMDb TV

Days after Amazon released the trailer for its I Know What You Did Last Summer series reboot, the streamer is developing another series based on 90s film from the same screenwriters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phoebe Fisher (Elementary, Assassination Nation) and Sarah Goodman (The Hardy Boys, Army of One) are behind a TV series adaptation of the 1999 teen erotic drama, Cruel Intentions, at Amazon’s streaming site, IMDb TV.

The series will see Fisher and Goodman team with the film’s producer, Neal Moritz (F9, XXX), according to The Hollywood Reporter. The original film was set at a prestigious high school with Sarah Michelle Gellar (Ringer, Scooby-Doo) and Ryan Phillippe (Secrets and Lies, Shooter) starring as scheming step-siblings, Kathryn and Sebastian, respectively. The two’s unique relationship began to unravel when a plot to bed a new girl, Annette, played by Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere) found Sebastian falling in love. The film also starred Selma Blair (Legally Blonde, Hellboy) Sean Patrick Thomas (Barbershop, Save the Last Dance), and Joshua Jackson (Dr. Death, Dawson’s Creek).

The Hollywood Reporter confirms the updated version will, again, center on two devious step-siblings who pursue life, liberty, and happiness at any cost. Set at a Washington D.C. college, the duo becomes embroiled in a Greek hazing scandal that threatens their status at the top of the societal hierarchy. To save face, they conspire to eliminate any threat in their way, including the daughter of the Commander-in-Chief.

This series reboot comes five years after NBC passed on version from Moritz and movie director and scribe, Roger Kumble (The Sweetest Thing, After We Collided), via The Hollywood Reporter. A pilot was filmed with Gellar reprising her role as Kathryn, but NBC allegedly had no room for the series in their summer of 2017 schedule.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fisher and Goodman will write and executive produce the series. Mortiz and Pavun Shetty (S.W.A.T., Happy!) will also executive produce under Mortiz’s Original Film imprint. These four are joined by Andrea Iervolino (Waiting for the Barbarians, Beyond the Sun) and Monica Bacardi (Bent, Lavender) via Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment. Bruce Mellon (The Skulls, Prom Night) will also produce. Sony TV returns as the production studio.
