2022 Emmy Nominations: HBO/HBO Max Lead All Networks; ‘Succession’ Tops Noms Followed By ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘White Lotus’

Today the Television Academy announced this year’s Emmy nominations at 11:30 a.m. ET/8:30 a.m. PT., with Curb Your Enthusiasm’s JB Smoove and Brooklyn-Nine-Nine’s Melissa Fumero performing the honors. According to Variety, this year’s most-nominated series was HBO’s Succession which debuted its third season last year. The family melodrama was followed by Apple TV+’s hit comedy, Ted Lasso, and the murder mystery satire, White Lotus which is setting up its second season. HBO/HBO Max led all networks with a grand total of 140 nominations.

Succession tops the contest with 25 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting noms for Brian Cox (Manhunter), Jeremy Strong (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Kieran Culkin (Scott Pilgrims vs. The World), Matthew Macfadyen (Operation Mincemeat), Nicholas Braun (Zola), Sarah Snook (The Dressmaker), and J. Smith Cameron (Search Party), via Variety. It’s closely followed by 20 nominations for the Emmy-winning Ted Lasso which includes three Outstanding Actor and two Outstanding Actress nominations. The White Lotus ties with 20 making it the most-nominated Limited or Anthology Series.

As both Succession and Ted Lasso are Emmy regulars, the academy did award some newcomers on the block. ABC’s Abbott Elementary, after a stellar first season, coveted a spot for Outstanding Comedy Series. And creator Quinta Brunson (A Black Lady Sketch Show) became the first Black woman to be nominated twice in the same year in the comedy category as she is up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Netflix’s foreign-language smash, Squid Game, coveted an Emmy first earning an Outstanding Drama Series nomination. It also scored acting nominations for lead Lee Jung-jae (Deliver Us From Evil) and supporting for HoYeon Jung (Disclaimer), Park Hae-soo (Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area), and Oh Yeong-su )(Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring).

Showtime’s Yellowjackets is up for drama series with Melanie Lynskey (Candy) and Christina Ricci (The Matrix Resurrections) both landing Lead and Supporting Actress nominations, respectively, according to Variety. And workplace thriller, Severance from Apple TV+, scored a drama series nom with Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) earning a nom for lead actor. The show earned supporting nominations for Patricia Arquette (Medium), John Turturro (The Plot Against America), and Christopher Walken (Saturday Night Live).

The limited series race, which still has some ambiguity to its qualifications, was dominated by streaming, particularly Hulu. Etching a record 58 nominations, the streaming platform’s Dopesick, The Dropout, and Pam and Tommy are all up for limited series. Acting noms include Michael Keaton (Birdman), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Amanda Seyfried (In Time), Lily James (Cinderella), and Sebastian Stan (Fresh). Netflix’s Inventing Anna and The White Lotus round out the category.

For many fans and critics alike, the final list had some glaring omissions. Noticeable snubs included FX’s Peabody-winning comedy series, Reservation Dogs, from Sterling Harjo (Mekko) and Taika Waititi (Thor: Love and Thunder). And the epic adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko from Apple TV+ only garnered a nom for Period Character Make-Up (Non-Prosthetic). Both series offered a slice of representation and diversity unprecedented on TV in years past. There was also the exclusion of acting nominations for NBC’s This Is Us. In its final season, many believed Mandy Moore (A Walk to Remember) would have scored a well-deserved nom and win. The academy awarded Station Eleven’s Himesh Patel (Yesterday) for Outstanding Lead Actor but failed to nominate Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate). A similar snafu occurred as Only Murders in the Building’s Steve Martin (Bringing Down the House) and Martin Short (The Morning Show) received nominations while their co-star, Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers), went without.

The 2022 Emmys will air Monday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. See the main nominations below. For the full list visit Emmys.com.
