The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has officially selected their picks for the highlights of the year 2020 in the world of scripted television. The 2020 Golden Globe nominees have finally been announced, and the Internet is already freely discussing everything from front-runners and givens to wild cards and snubs. The full list of nominees was announced by Golden Globe winners Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City, The Family Stone) and Taraji P. Henson (Empire, Hidden Figures) during an E! News live-stream the morning of February 3.
Six of Netflix’s buzziest original series, such as Emily in Paris, The Queen’s Gambit and The Crown, are up for Golden Globes in 2021, as reported by Gold Derby. As leading SVOD platform, it is hardly a surprise that Netflix’s original content dominated the critical conversation when in-home viewing options became the norm in response to the COVID-19 pandemic: “Streaming shows… did well in a year when many people’s in-person entertainment options were limited because of the coronavirus,” via The L.A. Times.
Netflix’s flood of nominations was not strictly limited to its television offerings. Several movies distributed by the streaming giant garnered special recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press. Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7, historical films set in the twentieth century, will vie for Best Drama. Over the Moon has joined the race for Best Animated Feature, Italian-language offering The Life Ahead is a competitor in the Best Foreign Language Motion Picture category, and the star-studded feel-good theater import The Prom is one of five films up for Best Musical or Comedy. Newly minted streaming service HBO Max netted a pair of nominations for The Flight Attendant, while its fellow WarnerMedia subsidiary HBO boasts five additional nominations total for its prestigious original programming in as many categories, which would make them the second-most-nominated distributor at the 2021 Golden Globes. However, their numbers are a far cry from Netflix’s twenty nominations that span nine categories.
