Don’t get too comfortable with these TV shows; they might be on the chopping block.
Wall St Cheat Sheet breaks down the 14 TV shows that are unlikely to receive renewals. The information was gathered from the TV by the Numbers “Renew/Cancel Index.”
“The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show’s new episode adult’s 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It’s calculated by dividing a show’s new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show’s own network. The network’s average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour-long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).”
If a show receives a score below 1, it is more likely to receive a cancellation. A score above 1 puts the show in safe territory but also still in jeopardy. A score above 2 pretty much assures the show will receive an early renewal.
The following are possible series cancellation but have not been confirmed by the networks.
Betrayal, ABC
ABC has a number of cancellations already under their belt with Lucky 7, Killer Women and The Assets. Betrayal received a score of 0.48 on the index. The series received a viewership of around 3 million and the finale received 3.31 million viewers. While the viewership went down it did not fall fast.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, ABC
This series is a spinoff from ABC’s wildly popular Once Upon a Time. It received a 0.55 on the index and held that score since the fall. The series did not draw a large enough audience early enough and recently received 3.27 million viewers. This makes it the second least-watched episode of the series.
The Neighbors, ABC
The Neighbors, the sci-fi sitcom, received a 0.59 on the index, which is only a slight difference from the fall score. The series is currently in its second season and its most recent episode received the lowest rating for the entire series so far with 3.6 million viewers.
Trophy Wife, ABC
The series has received positive reviews from critics but it has not translated over towards viewership. The series received a 0.59 on the index. The premiere received 6.69 million viewers but that fell to just 2.99 million for their most recent episode. There are only three more episodes to go and may need to gain viewership momentum for a second season.
Enlisted, Fox
Fox recently cancelled Raising Hope (0.44 on the index) and they may have Enlisted on the chopping block as well. The series received a 0.49 on the index. The series only attracted 2.41 million viewers during its premiere the series attracted 3.23 million for their third episode. Since then the viewership has fallen to 1.84 million.
Rake, Fox
Newest series on the Fox schedule is Rake and it received a higher score than recently renewed shows like The Mindy Project and Glee at 0.75 it will likely to get the ax. There are mixed critical responses for the show. It premiered to 6.95 million viewers and fell recently to 3.53 million.
Dads, Fox
The Fox series received a score of 0.83. The series premiered to 5.76 million viewers and maintained around 3 million viewers throughout the season. Critics were not particularly content with the series and finale brought in the lowest viewership for the entire season with 2.49 million.
Almost Human, Fox
Although the series has a 1.16 score on the index the viewership has fallen almost 50% since its premiere. The series premiered to 9.18 million viewers and in recent weeks received a viewership in the mid-5 millions. A renewal may be unlikely given the production costs and low viewership.
Hostages, CBS
Hostages received a score of 0.46. The series premiered to 7.41 million viewers and in recent episodes fell to 4 to 5 million viewers. The numbers are higher than the series already mentioned but the cost of the show may be a deciding factor in the series renewal.
Intelligence, CBS
Just like Hostages, CBS’ high-concept series Intelligence did not perform as CBS had hoped. The series received a score of 0.60. The series started strong with 16.49 million watching the premiere but that number took a drastic dip to the mid 5 millions. Viewership may have dropped because the plot of the series was a tad confusing. Once again, production cost and the time slot of the series could play a factor in its cancellation.
The Mentalist, CBS
The Mentalist received a score of 0.72 and could be the next to go for CBS. The series is already in their sixth season. The show had 9 million viewers per episode this season. The first three seasons averaged 15 million viewers. In recent episodes, numbers have risen to 10 million viewers and could possibly see a seventh season. It will most likely depend on the final episodes and the finale ratings.
Dracula, NBC
The series received a score of 0.66 on the index. NBC has already cancelled four series and the only new series left is Dracula. It has not been able to catch on with viewers, has a large production cost and the finale did not bring in a large enough viewership with 3.04 million.
The Carrie Diaries, The CW
This series was not expected to receive a second season. It scored a 0.50 on the index. It only reached 700,000 per episode in the second season. The numbers alone hint this show will not return.
Beauty and the Beast, The CW
Based on a 1987 TV series the police procedural show received a 0.48 on the index. It received the lost viewer rating of the second season in recent weeks.
Bonus: Mind Games, ABC
Recent ABC series, Mind Games, received a 0.52 score on the index. It premiered to 3.58 million viewers and recent episodes have pulled in 2.68 million. It is too early to tell how the series will fare and if ABC will renew it.
