A new ten-episode Sex and the City revival is starting production this year for HBO Max, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new series, titled And Just Like That… will center around Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker, Divorce), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis, Couples Retreat) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon, Ratched) in their continued dealings with relationships, the women now in their 50s, per Variety.
All of the stars shared the news Sunday through separate Instagram posts of the same teaser featuring the title and Parker’s voice.
“I couldn’t help but wonder… where are they now?,” Parker said in the caption on her Instagram post.
Sarah Aubrey, head of originals at HBO Max, said she wants to see what is new in the lives of those in Sex and the City, according to Variety.
“I grew up with these characters,” Aubrey said, “and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humor and the beloved city that has always defined them.”
In addition to the three major stars that return to the series, their Emmy-winning director Michael Patrick King will return as executive producer, via The Hollywood Reporter. However, neither the series creator Darren Star (recently, Emily in Paris creator) nor Kim Cattrall (Tell Me a Story), who played Samantha Jones, will be involved in the revival.
In an October interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Star said he felt that the time for him and “Sex and the City” had passed.
“I May Destroy You is the Sex and the City for now,” Star said. “Girls was the Sex and the City for its moment. I wouldn’t be doing Sex and the City today. Twenty years ago, I knew those people that I was writing about. I understood the time, and I understood the characters, and also, what needed to be said.”
While Cattrall may have had personal reasons for her absence from the new series, she has not said anything on the matter. In response to fans’ questions, Parker wrote on Instagram, “Samantha [Cattrall’s character] isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do,” according to Today.
Production on the revival is set to begin in late spring, but as of yet, no premiere window has been set, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
