On the third day of New York Comic Con, DC Studios showed fans the first full trailer for their adult animated series, Creature Commandos. This follows a teaser trailer that dropped during San Diego Comic-Con this July. The series is the first project among the retconned DC Universe helmed by co-directors James Gunn (The Suicide Squad, Brightburn) and Peter Safran (Aquaman, Flatliners). View the trailer below.
After Congress forbade Amanda Waller from using human prisoners for future covert missions, she pivoted to find inhuman prisoners instead, thus the Creature Commandos were formed. Led by Rick Flag Sr., the troop is assigned to take on the most dangerous threats to humanity, without getting caught.
Announced in January of 2023 as part of DC’s Gods and Monsters: Chapter 1, the series is based on comic characters first featured in Weird War Tales issue #93. The diverse collection of monsters was outfitted to take down Nazis during WW1. The original lineup included a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstien’s monster, and a gorgon. This iteration has a mix of non-human and human team members.
Formed by Waller, voiced by Viola Davis (The Woman King, How to Get Away with Murder), the team will include The Suicide Squad’s Weasel, Nina Mazursky, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, Rick Flag Sr., Doctor Phosphorus, and G.I. Robot.
The series cast includes Russ Bain (Lift, Residue) as Craic Brothers, Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Gilmore Girls) as G.I Robot, Indira Varma (Rome, Luther) as Bride of Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk (Harley Quinn, Resident Alien) as Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour (Stranger Things, Black Widow) as Eric Frankenstein, and Frank Grillo (What If…?, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as Rick Flag Sr. This series is unique because of Gunn and Safran’s plan for these actors to reprise their character roles in future live-action adaptations as well, to keep universe continuity.
“Television, movies, and games all intertwine within the same universe,” Gun told Comicbook. “We’re going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this as well as in other things, some of which we’ve already cast. I’ve written all seven episodes of the show, and it’s in production. So that’s the first thing, and I love it.”
All seven episodes of Creature Commandos premiere exclusively on Max on December 5.
