Back in December 2020, Netflix’s Selena: The Series re-introduced streaming audiences to Tejano singer, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Now, the second half of the series is set to release on Tuesday, May 4, according to TVLine. Along with the release date announcement, Netflix treated fans to a teaser for part two of the series.
Selena: The Series is based on Selena’s life story, her unprecedented rise to fame, and her tragic death. According to TVLine, the first part of the series, which consists of nine episodes, chronicled many different events in the singer’s life. In the finale, Selena’s father and sister, Abraham and Suzette Quintanilla, discovered her relationship with Chris Pérez, causing Pérez to be removed from the band.
In Selena: The Series, Selena is portrayed by Christian Serratos (The Walking Dead) during her teenage and adult years, with actress Madison Taylor Baez (The Tooth Racket) depicting the singer as a child. Via TVLine, Abraham, is played by Ricardo Chavira (Burn Notice), Suzette is played by Noemi Gonzalez (East Los High), and Jesse Posey (Stitchers) plays Pérez, Selena’s husband.
According to TVLine, the series moves throughout different timelines within the singer and her family’s life, featuring younger versions of both herself, her siblings, and her parents. Seidy López (Training Day) stars as Marcella Quintanilla, and Aneasa Yacoub (Lethal Weapon) plays a young Marcella. Brandol Ruiz (Cupid’s Paradise) portrays young Abraham, Gabriel Chavarria (War for the Planet of the Apes) plays A.B. Quintanilla, Juan Martinez (Grey’s Anatomy) portrays a young A.B., and newcomer Daniela Estrada plays a young Suzette.
Netflix’s series is not the first time Selena’s story has been adapted into a biopic format. The 1997 film, Selena, starred Jennifer Lopez in the titular role. (actor and executive producer, Shades of Blue). By starring in the lead role, Lopez received her first Golden Globe nomination.
