Following Daniel Radcliff‘s (Mulligan, Miracle Workers) letter to Dominic McLaughlin, the upcoming Harry Potter series’ new title character, Rupert Grint (Servant, Snatch) has addressed some heartfelt words of his own to the show’s young Ron Weasley, played by Alastair Stout, according to Deadline.
Speaking to BBC News, Grint revealed that he had written a letter to Stout offering his best wishes to the young star, noting that he was “passing the baton,” per Deadline.
“I wrote him a letter, before they started, passing the baton as it were,” he said via Deadline. “It was really just wishing him all the best with it. I had so much fun stepping into this world, and I hope he has the same experience.”
Per Deadline, Grint added that he’s interested to see a new performer step into a role he first held more than 20 years ago, saying “It’s quite strange to have the cycle happening again … I’m really intrigued what it’s going to be like.”
He also noted “a bit of family resemblance” between himself and the young actor. “I think it’s great that it’s a whole new thing. It’s going to be its own thing, and I think that will be fun,” he said, according to Deadline.
Grint’s letter follows on last week’s news that Radcliffe had written to McLaughlin in his own letter in which the star of the Harry Potter film series expressed his well wishes to the new Harry, Deadline reports.
“I just see these pictures of him and the other kids and I just want to hug them,” Radcliffe said of McLaughlin and the rest of the young cast, per Deadline. “They just seem so young. I just look at them and say, ‘Oh it’s crazy I was doing that at that age.’ But it’s also incredibly sweet, and I hope they’re having a great time.”
Grint hasn’t ruled out returning to the Harry Potter franchise, although he has said that it is not a priority at the moment, according to Deadline. Tom Felton (Origin, The Flash), who played Draco Malfoy in the film series, recently reprised his role for the first time in the Broadway adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
However, the franchise has been roiled by creator J.K. Rowling‘s (Cormoran Strike, The Casual Vacancy) anti-trans views, which have led many to boycott Harry Potter altogether. Recently John Lithgow (The Old Man, Conclave), who will play Albus Dumbledore in the new series, has faced backlash for joining the cast due to the impact Rowling’s activism has had on many fans of the franchise.
Deadline reports that production of the new Potter series began in July and is now in full swing, with Arabella Stanton starring as Hermione Granger along with McLaughlin’s Potter and Stout’s Weasley. In addition, the show has cast Nick Frost (Transaction, The World’s End) as Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer (MobLand, Albert Nobbs) as Professor McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu (The Outrun, I May Destroy You) as Severus Snape.
