Following the double-dose of action within “City of Flowers,” episode five takes a more methodical pace as K’iana returns home. While things appear to be the same on the surface, his resurrection complicates the political makeup of Hawai’i and quells the embers of a forbidden love.
K’iana finds Hawai’i’s chiefs divided as Keōua seeks to admonish Kamehameha until he returns the title of God of War to the newly selected king. K’iana hopes to partner with Kamehamea on a new strategy against Kahekili, using the red-mouth weaponry of the Paleskins. But the meek-hearted farmer will not be so easily persuaded. Moku, untrustworthy of K’iana, calls for him to battle Kamehameha in a volcano sled race. If he is victorious, K’iana earns a seat on the council.

Meanwhile, K’iana’s family embraces him with open arms. But his untimely return dashes the affair between Kupuohi and Namake. The secret stays suppressed as K’iana reunites with his true love. Namake accepts this fortune solemnly.
Tensions are high on the day of the sled race. But Kamehameha, the humbled soul he is, willingly accepts defeat and welcomes K’iana to his council. As the prodigal son celebrates his homecoming with Kupuohi that evening, fires are set ablaze to Kamehameha’s crops. A vexed Keōua betrays the word of his council, striking against the alleged Prophesied One.
This episode has a much slower pace than the previous entries, but it delivers with strong performances and writing. The steadier, concentrated pace allowed the characters to shine, especially Kaina Makua’s Kamehameha. His good-hearted wisdom and quiet strength are what one would seek in a leader. It is no wonder that other men of alleged higher stature or class have disdain for him, thinking he is not worthy of such admiration. This disdain is perfectly displayed in Cliff Curtis’s performance as Keōua; the classic tale of a slighted royal outshone by someone of common lineage. His heel turn will be impressive to witness, and sadly, could spell tragedy for the beloved Kamehameha.

In addition to the great story, the volcano sled scene was entertaining. While not the best CGI, it was totally unexpected and gave a wildly taut episode a welcome release.
