‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Season 2 Episode 6 “Into Rimecleft”

Amazon Prime Video’s original series The Legend of Vox Machina season two episode six entitled “Into Rimecleft” kicks off with Travis Willingham’s Grog as he has a nightmare the ends with him killing his friends. This is due to the cursed sword taking over him as it lives to feed on blood. In his mind Grog sees that the sword is extremely useful when it comes to fighting which is why he decides to keep it around. The viewer could argue that he enjoys the rampage the sword makes him go on as he loves to fight. This could be a result of Grog’s people being inclined to fighting to the death and enjoying killing. However, Grog is not like the rest of his own kind as he snaps out of it when he sees he killed his friends. Deep down Grog is afraid that despite his best efforts he is a killer just like his people are. Which is why he tends to hide the sword’s true nature away from his friends. That way they keep believing he is different from the rest of his own kind.

Additionally, the team find themselves having to prove themselves to the sphinx’s mate to get the rest of the magical weapons locations. The interesting part about this is how Sam Riegel’s Scanlan Shorthalt ends up completing the challenge and hurts the sphinx’s mate by using music. This action ends up making this episode one of the most humorous in the series as it leaves the viewer with a feeling of disbelief at the fact that a musical song is what it takes to complete the challenge. Not to mention that after the rest of the team recovers, they all express their disbelief in another humorous scene. However, the viewer can argue that the reason it works is due to the sphinx’s mate and Scanlan having a moment of vulnerability. In his mind, he feels as if he needs to treat everything as a joke to hide his insecurities about love. Deep down he feels as if there is no one he can talk to about this topic as he thinks he will get ridiculed for it. Luckily, he finds out firsthand that he is not alone. And that there are others who have problems with love as well so he should not feel alone.

At the end of the episode, the viewer sees Grog’s worst fears come true when he stabs Ashley Johnson’s Pike Trickfoot due to his sword taking over his mind. At this point Grog has no idea what to do as he now knows he has crossed a line that he might be able to come back from. What makes this worse for him is that this could have been prevented if he was just more honest about his sword. Unfortunately, his dishonesty might cost him one of his dearest friends, which is something that he will never forget.
