In season seven episode seven of Amazon’s Bosch, titled “Workaround,” Detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver, Lost) finds himself in the greatest turmoil of his career. His love interest Judge Sobel was just murdered, his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz, The Walking Dead) was nearly shot, his partner Jerry Edgar (Jamie Hector, The Wire) is unreliable, and he’s been given orders to stand down on an arson case near to his heart.
All season Bosch has been trying to arrest the Las Palmas gang leader, Mickey Peña (Gino Vento, Bloodline), that was responsible for giving orders to one of his foot soldiers to burn down a building, killing several tenets including a ten-year-old girl. However, Chief Irving (Lance Reddick, The Wire) tells him to stand down. Irving is pulling some sneaky business: he uses a key piece of information in the case to leverage himself against Mayor Lopez (Natalia Castellanos, Battleship) so he can secure a second term as Chief. He doesn’t want Bosch poking around and messing up his chance for a second term, but Bosch isn’t having it.
The thing we love and appreciate about Bosch, is that unlike other on-screen Detectives, he isn’t shadowed by vices. He isn’t a high-functioning alcoholic or hiding some devilish secret, but instead, he is a man on a journey for justice and doing the right thing even if it means pissing some people off along the way. That’s why it will be interesting to see if Bosch goes rogue in the arson case and chooses to pursue the gang leader himself, even if his boss is telling him to stand back. Has Bosch ever been good at taking orders? Nope. Bosch has already promised the father of one of the arson victims justice, and Bosch is known for keeping his promises.
Meanwhile, Lt. Billets (Amy Aquino, ER) is dealing with the firestorm from hell after two cops tried to frame her for strong arming a local business owner into giving her earrings. These are the two cops that have been harassing Billets by photoshopping her onto crude photos and vandalizing her car. Total incels. Nobody believed Billets, but she finally was able to prove it was them after the business owner confessed that Captain Cooper (Mark Herrier, M*A*S*H) made him give the cops the earrings to plant on her car. You fools thought you could pull one on Billets? Idiots.
The most surprising part of this episode was not just in the action, but actually a surprise cameo by Iliza Schlesinger, an iconic comedian known for her Netflix specials Freezing Hot and Elder Millennial, amongst many others. It turns out, Schlesinger is a total Bosch-head. She’s got some killer tweets about Bosch from when she binged the series during quarantine.
Although her cameo as a cop searching Billets car was small, it left a big impression to see a face with so much star power suddenly pop on the screen. Definitely an awesome surprise for viewers, and probably an exciting moment for Schlesinger, a super fan of the show!
With one episode left in the series, there are still a lot of loose ends to tie up. Will Bosch go rogue and take the arson case into his own hands?
