Review: ‘Yellowstone’ Season 5, Episode 10 “The Apocalypse of Change”

Previously on Paramount’s Yellowstone, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) arrive at their father’s mansion to find out that John (Kevin Costner) died by suicide. Beth immediately thinks their brother, Jamie (Wes Bentley), had something to do with it. So, she and Kayce begin to plan a way to find out the whole truth of what really happened.

The episode begins with the wranglers still in Texas, waking up early in the morning. Rip (Cole Hauser) goes into Teeter’s (Jennifer Landon) tent and she’s shaking in her sleeping bag. There’s a rattlesnake on her chest, so he grabs it and takes it outside. Walker (Ryan Bingham) cuts its head off and Rip tells Teeter to close her tent all the way next time. They figure out that they are camped up right on top of a snake den, which means rattlesnakes are everywhere.

They set up camp somewhere else. Ryan (Ian Bohen) notices someone speeding to their camp and Rip realizes it’s Beth. She wants to take him for a couple of days to a hotel room, so she makes a deal with the wranglers, that she’ll have Colby (Denim Richards) and Walker’s girlfriend fly up there so they can have alone time as well.

Later, we see Beth and Rip back at home, while Ryan, Walker, Jake (Jake Ream), and Teeter are still at the 6666 Ranch. Lloyd’s (Forie Smith) talking to Rip about something that went down in the newspapers. The news that John died by suicide comes out and this means that the ranch could be stopped indefinitely.

Rip goes to Connor, waking him up. Rip tells him not to believe everything he sees on the papers. He tells the boy that he’ll always be welcome to the ranch, no matter what happens to it.

Kayce takes a walk with Tate (Brecken Merrill), talking about John’s legacy. Kayce asks him what he wants to do when he grows up. Tate says that he wants to work on the ranch. Tate doesn’t understand why John would commit suicide and Kayce tells him that there’s a lot Tate doesn’t know, but that he’ll just have to continue living his life.

Later, we see Jamie at the courthouse. Jamie acts like he’s sad throughout the day, but knows what really happened. His secretary lets him know that Beth is waiting in his office. When he walks inside, she’s sitting at his desk.

She walks to him and slaps him, demanding him to look at her. She slaps him a couple more times and asks why he can’t look at her. It’s obvious that he’s guilty. She warns him that he has one last chance to come clean to her about everything, swearing to him, “Seeing me will be the last thing you ever do alive.”

Beth speed walks out of the office, breathing heavily. She mutters that she knew it was him all along. She panics and calls Kayce to tell him that it was Jamie. Kayce calls a fellow war buddy and tells him he needs some help with something. Monica (Kelsey Asbille) goes out of her car to check on him and he tells her to meet him at the ranch.

Kayce calls his friend on another number and tells him everything. He tries to get some info on how it all could have been set up as a suicide. His friend tells him he’ll make some calls to get information on who these people could be.

Back at Jamie’s office, Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) and Ellis (John Tracy) meet with him about the ranch and the Governor’s office. Ellis tells Jamie he’ll have their support when he runs for governor. When Ellis leaves, Jamie tells Sarah that Beth knows. Sarah makes it seem like what they did is a good thing.

Next, Rip drops John’s girlfriend Summer (Piper Perabo) off at the airport. She’s sad that the ranch will be gone. Rip tells her that even if it goes away, it will come back somehow.

At the end of the episode, we see the wranglers in Texas getting ready for the day. As they get on their horses, Ryan says, “Let’s get to work.”

Overall, even though this was a slow episode, it was generally well put together. Everyone being away from the ranch for a while gave the audience some light on what things look like outside of Montana.
