Previously on HBO Max’s The Pitt, McKay, Princess, and Javadi dealt with a cancer patient who came in for a seizure, while having support from her husband and her death doula. Meanwhile, Samira’s patient, Orlando, is still figuring out how his family can cover the medical charges. At the end of the episode, their patient, Louie, crashes abruptly.
The episode begins with Robby and Langdon trying to save Louie’s life. Meanwhile, Dana is still showing Emma the ropes. She gets a call, they’ve got incoming trauma. They go into Louie’s room, and sadly, he doesn’t make it. Robby, Perlah, and Frank get emotional— he was one of their frequent patients.
The student, Jackson, talks with Javadi, Princess, and Caleb, their psychiatrist, and he tells them that “they” don’t want him to pass the bar, but no one knows who he’s talking about. He becomes defensive, so Princess has his sister step out of the room so Caleb and Javadi can talk to him alone.
Ogilvie harshly tells Whitaker that Louie has passed, and he freaks out, hurrying to the room. Frank finds a picture of a woman in his wallet, and they find an emergency contact phone number. It turns out to be the hospital’s. Later, Dana teaches Emma how to clean Louie’s body before transferring him to the viewing room.
Santos, Perlah, Whitaker, and Robby start their procedure on their new patient, Brandon, injured from a motorcycle accident.
Baran, Samira, and King want to keep their incarcerated patient admitted for a few days, to give him enough food portions, which he doesn’t get in prison. Robby says he’ll look over everything and talk to the prison doctor to see if there’s anything they can do before making the decision. Jesse steps out of the patient’s room, leaving Dana to talk to him. We don’t see it, but she does something to make his oxygen levels drop on the machine, which ultimately means he has to stay. Robby knows she did something, but she doesn’t say anything.

McKay, Javadi, and Princess’s cancer patient is good to go, but she tells her husband, Paul, that he can leave before her. Ultimately, she decides not to leave, knowing the burden she has become on her family.
One of Santos’ patients is sent up for surgery, but a physician comes down to highlight that Santos’ notes were wrong. Santos realizes that she didn’t proofread the patient’s notes while using Baran’s AI app. Robby tells Baran, and Baran tells him that Santos should have proofread. Santos hasn’t been having the best day, tired and stressed.
Everyone goes into the viewing room for the debrief to say their goodbyes to Louie. They learn from Robby that the woman in the picture is Louie’s wife. Louie’s wife was pregnant when she died in a car accident.
Overall, this was a pretty sad and chaotic episode. It was so sad to see that Louie didn’t make it, but it was to be expected. It was a peaceful, emotional moment for everyone in the viewing room. Robby telling everyone about Louie and his past stood out the most this episode. The story makes sense of everything Louie struggled with— more specifically, his addiction. Ernest Harden Jr. excelled in his role as Louie. He brought kindness, patience, and even humor into the role. It is exciting to finally get to see Shawn Hatosy back in the next episode as Dr. Jack Abbot.
