Episode 5 begins with Ben and Cat going to a diner, talking about how Ben became The Spider. Ben then tells Cat that part of the reason he took the case was because if something gave them their powers, maybe something could take them back.
We then see Ben, Janet and Robbie talking about veterans with superpowers, and how the Germans were doing experiments on the POWs as part of a failed super soldier program. Janet further informs that they were seeing the same doctor at the VA hospital in Queens, and that he has been studying the POWs for 10 years, so Ben and Robbie go to speak to her.
Robbie is brought outside the hospital by Dr. Faber and her secretary Ogden, while Ben sneaks into the office to get the files. Robbie confronts Dr Faber about her four patients that turned out to have superpowers, and that their powers only started after seeing her. She dodges the question and walks away and heads to the office. Ben manages to find some secret files, just as Ogden and Faber walk into the office.
Ben manages to leave by pretending to be a confused patient, but Ogden recognizes him. After Lonnie, Flint, and Silvermane break Leyden (Megawatt) out of prison, Robbie reads from the files. These files say that the prisoners were injected with radiated plants, minerals, and genetic material of different animals. Then their ones were spliced with those of other entities. The doctor was trying to save them, but she activated the latent mutations in the process. Ben then gets a call to meet with Silvermane (along with Lonnie, Flint, and Leyden) who tells him to warn The Spider that this fight is between him and Morris.
After the meeting, Flint confronts Ben and tells him he knows he lied that Winston was the rat but said nothing since he saved Cat. After Ben tells Cat about the doctor, and they have a little moment, Ben tells Janet at a diner that he’s leaving town. She immediately figures out it’s because he’s leaving with Cat, and she is happy for him. While Cat is packing, someone knocks on her door. It turns out to be Lonnie, who brings her to see Flint.
When they get to the theatre, they have an argument about their relationship and Silvermane, to which Flint storms off. Cat then talks with Lonnie about the doctor. Lonnie mentions that the doctor believes The Spider’s mutation is more stable, and that he could be the answer to all of this. The only problem is she doesn’t know who The Spider is, so Cat then goes to Dr Faber to tell her The Spider is Ben Reilly.
This episode was good. The title of the episode might have given away the betrayal by Cat Hardy a little bit, but it’s not a huge deal. It was still a cool episode, especially with the performances of Nicolas Cage, and Andrew Lewis Caldwell (the guy who plays Megawatt, though of course everyone’s performance in this show is great).
