Review: ‘Rooster Season 1, Episode 6 “Cop Hawk”

Greg has got a hot new mode of transportation: a bike that is about half as cool as a motorcycle. Katie isn’t very impressed, but Greg’s favorite officer threatens to give him a ticket as it isn’t really street legal. Archie and Katie continue to see one another, as  Archie still sees Sunny. Katie is very upset about this as a part of her feels guilty for being the other woman, and another part of her despises Archie in general for seeing two women. Greg and Cristle are also seeing each other, but it’s much more casual than Cristle would like.

Greg notices that Tommy is having trouble concentrating in class. Tommy opens up to him that  he doesn’t have anywhere to live as his roommates kicked him out for not paying the rent on time. He’s been sleeping on friends’ floors. Greg is saddened by this news, so he invites Tommy to stay with him for a couple of nights so he can figure some stuff out. Later, Greg and Cristle attend one of Walt’s lectures. After speaking with one another during the entire lecture, Greg realizes that she wants to go on a real date. Greg asks her out, and she is very happy. He’s finally getting back out there since Beth, for real this time.

Greg gets on his bike and catches Katie on campus. He’s wearing a shirt with the sloganFor Katie” with her face on it. Katie is not happy as she believes this is starting to get out of hand. She asks her dad to describe the student who gave him the shirt, and Katie takes the bike to hunt her down. Katie knows that the student, Zoey, is at her favorite coffee shop. She tells Zoey to stop with the t-shirts and be more professional. This upsets Zoey, who becomes less attentive in Katie’s class. Katie eventually apologizes to Zoey for being so harsh. We know Katie’s anger is coming from her affair with Archie. Zoey understands, and Katie of course is still her favorite professor.

While Sunny relaxes in the sauna, Walt has some big news for her: she got a job! Not even an internship, a job. As her advisor, Walt sent her resume out and Sunny killed the interviews; all she has to do is graduate, then she’s off. While studying on campus, Archie approaches her and asks if she’s heard back from any of the jobs yet, she says no. By keeping this information from Archie, this proves that the issues in their relationship are becoming  more serious for her. While Dylan starts setting decorations up in her new office, Walt enters and the look on his face says enough. The original dean is back from the hospital, leaving Dylan back down to her original position. She is very upset as she was just getting used to this position. She even hitched a ride with Greg on the bike because she was so happy about moving up the ladder.

Tommy and his friends are at Greg’s house hanging out. Tommy tells Greg that he has a deal with his parents: he has to keep a certain GPA or else they will cut him off financially. Greg acts like “one of the boys” and tells the gang that he has a date. Tommy and friends hype him up to get out there and be the best man he can be. Greg decides that Tommy needs to go back to his parent’s house because he feels it’s better for him. Tommy agrees and Greg goes on his date! At dinner, things go very well. Him and Cristle hit it off and they continue to see one another. She invites Greg back to her place. He’s in the dark when he sees Tommy! He asks him what on earth he’s doing at Cristle’s house. Tommy tells Greg that he lives there! Cut to black.

This episode worked very well due to the writing and intertwining the storylines together. Sunny is slowly starting to become successful, even though Archie is almost constantly kicking her down by making everything about him. Katie feeling really guilty about her affair with Archie blends well together because her students, and even her dad, continue to look up to her. She and Archie are really the only ones who know what they’re doing, and it’s killing one of them: Katie. She has an opportunity to do the right thing and grow as a character. Sunny clearly doesn’t trust Archie and has so much going for her, so she also has an opportunity for some growth. The plot twist at the end was just a cherry on top because of the relationship between Tommy and Greg Tommy also mentioned his parents throughout the episode; does this mean Cristle is still married? Is she cheating on her husband with Greg? Finally, we ultimately feel bad for Dylan as she was just getting used to her role as Dean, and she liked it. Dylan’s character arc could involve standing up for herself. Perfectly executed.
