Review: ‘Like a Dragon: Yakuza’, Season 1, Episode 3, “Brothers / Sisters”

As Aiko flees the scene of the explosion, Kazuma safely delivers Haruka to Yumi. Now that Haruka is safe, Aiko has new concerns, such as Kiryu searching for her. Kazuma then meets with Nishiku, who sends over protection for Yumi.

Kazuma and Nishiki sit and drink with each other for the first time in years, though surrounded by Nishiki’s henchmen. Once alone, they embrace. Now Kazuma, Nishiki, and Yumi are back together and working on a new plan as they did in the past.

Yumi looks into the past, remembering when she went looking for her sister Aiko. Back in 2005, Yumi paid a private investigator to find Aiko’s location. Miho joins her, and the two venture out by bus.

As Yumi and Miho look for Aiko, Nishiki, and Kazuma look for Edgar’s sister, Alice, in hopes of retrieving the deed’s seal. Once they find her hideout, the two men begin a chase with her, with other yakuza gangsters following. This search evolves into a fight over who will bring in Alice. Kazuma and Nishiki remain victorious, though they are surrounded by the police. As the two escape, the detective finds Alice only to take the seal for himself.

Dojima scolds one of his henchmen as they selfishly opened fire, ruining his reputation. Now Dojima has lost his sponsors. As he stabs the eye out of the yakuza member, the crooked cop turns the seal over.

Yumi and Miho find Aiko’s location, though it’s highly suspicious. It appears as a shabby host club. Yumi pays a man at the desk to see Aiko, but she is met with an older woman claiming to be Aiko. The men and hosts cackle, revealing that Yumi and Miho were scammed. As they leave empty-handed, a woman appears behind the desk. It’s shown that Aiko was there, though she wanted nothing to do with Yumi. Aiko pocketed Yumi’s cash, leaving Yumi unfulfilled.

The timeline returns to 2005, and Yumi and Kazuma begin investigating Aiko’s disappearance after the explosion. They reach the location of a tracker who can hack traffic cameras and more. This tracker is Ichiban Kasuga, the crooked cop who was rewarded by Dojima for retrieving the seal. In return for revealing Aiko’s location, Ichiban wants Kazuma to fight again and for him to manage the fights. Kazuma agrees and is shown that Aiko was last with her troublesome ex, Oishi

Audiences are shown drunk Oishi stumbling into a restaurant before it closes. As he eats and brags about his status as a thief, a group walks in and begins to beat Oishi. As the stranger raises their head, audiences see a demon mask.

This episode establishes Aiko’s tricky character, as she’s seen abandoning her daughter in episode two and is now shown stealing Yumi’s money. New, repeating characters are also introduced, one of whom is Ichiban. As the plot continues, audiences can expect to find out how Kazuma was arrested, what secrets Aiko holds, and how these murderous demon-yakuza individuals are involved. The use of past and present will help viewers uncover the mystery suspensefully, making the plot richer and more thrilling.
