On August 29th, Netflix released their new anticipated show, KAOS, starring Jeff Goldblum and Janet McTeer. This story takes place in a universe where Greek gods rule over modern Earth, and many walk with humans.
In this first episode of KAOS, audiences are met with several key characters, along with the
overall premise of the show. There are the Greek gods, ruled by Zeus, are flawed, and vain
characters who oversee the mortal realm. Zeus, portrayed by Jeff Goldblum, is shown as a
power leader of the gods, though paranoid by a looming prophecy of his downfall.
Viewers are then introduced to mortals whose lives will be unexpectedly intertwined with the gods. Among this group is Orpheus, who is met with tragedy along with his girlfriend, Eurydice. There is also Riddy, a young woman with her own issues, who is caught up in the gods’ schemes after encountering a perplexing stranger.
This episode introduces its revolving characters along with its ton of dark humor and drama.
This is mixed with mythological and supernatural elements, seemingly exploring themes of fate and the complexities of human nature. While the gods must face their fears, and mortals deal with the growing chaos in the human realm, this series’ stage is set for many interconnected tales that will unfold in the following episodes.
KAOS’s first episode introduced many different elements to viewers, but many that are not
unknown. This show presents the classic fantasy trope of gods acting like humans, almost
making it indistinguishable from others. The modern writing is similar to many that plague
Netflix and many writing rooms, leaving this show to rely on the soundtrack and
cinematography. The best component this show brings viewers is Jeff Goldblum’s captivating performance. After viewing this first episode, one can see a lot of Netflix’s funding for KAOS went towards Goldblum. Overall, this new Netflix original is a fun viewing to binge, but possibly not to invest in.
