In the newest episode of Invincible, Mark continues to train Oliver as his powers grow. On this mission, Eve joins the training while Oliver fights The Elephant. Oliver quickly overpowers this villain and begs Mark to give him more competition. Despite Oliver’s capabilities, Mark is adamant about Oliver starting small, as Nolan trained Mark.
Oliver continues to miss his father and has a difficult time comprehending Nolan’s negative reputation. He admits that he has a superhuman memory and explains that that he remembers when he was a baby on his home planet. There, Nolan was a great, kind leader, making it difficult for Oliver to understand his father’s heinous actions against humanity. While Nolan has saved many lives, he’s also seen as a threat to Earth. He had a mission to do even if lives were at risk.
Meanwhile, Mark’s personal life thrives as he continues dating Eve while Debbie gets comfortable with Paul. The group has family dinners, and Paul attempts to get closer to Mark. Paul relates to Mark’s business work, explaining how reputation is extremely important to clients.
Mark and Eve visit William for his birthday at the bowling alley. Amber arrives as another guest with her new boyfriend, Kyle, during this small get-together. Mark is more awkward about the situation, though Amber reminds him how happy they both are in their new relationships. At this moment, the news appears on the television, revealing a new villain demanding Invincible. Mark quickly turns off the TV and explains how he’s not the only superhuman and that this time with his friends is important to him.
This new villain, Powerplex, also known as Scott Deval, finds support in his wife and plans to make another appearance at the Chicago memorial dedicated to the lives lost during Mark and Nolan’s infamous fight.
Mark, his family, and Eve attend the memorial to pay their respects. Powerplex arrives at this memorial, completely disrupting it. Powerplex demands Invincible, accusing him of killing countless people with no repercussions. Eve decides to step in while backup arrives. The Guardians quickly detain him, though Powerplex breaks out of Cecil’s grasp and escapes to his wife and child.
Mark reflects on how his actions have affected people like Scott and his family. Cecil has kept these consequences from him over the years, and Mark now realizes the toll of his powers. Mark finds Powerplex holding his wife and child as fake hostages. Instead of fighting, Mark tries to apologize. Powerflex fights Mark and overpowers him at a huge cost. As Scott becomes uncontrollable, Mark embraces him until his supercharged suit breaks down.
In this episode, Mark’s reputation is questioned as he is seen as a villain by those who lost loved ones due to his fights. Once again, Mark mirrors his father as he, too, can be misunderstood. Superhumans have a huge responsibility that comes with their powers, as Mark is taught again. Audiences may anticipate similar themes applied to Oliver as he doesn’t understand that responsibility just yet.
