Episode 1 begins with an explanation of how chefs came to be in power after the economy collapsed. We then see Jiro preparing sushi when some men come in to see if Jiro is as good as they say. After enjoying the sushi, Jiro cuts off one of the men’s heads after he dips his sushi in soy sauce.
The police arrive to investigate the scene, where he admits to the head detective that he cut off the guy’s head because he used soy sauce. She then says that even though he beheaded someone, no one usually gives a shit about crimes that happen in the outer ring. However, he killed Louis Cervantes, the biggest fruit purveyor in the city, and Bob’s right-hand man, and that he is going to be pissed. She then asks him if he works for Rose, Bob’s rival. Jiro doesn’t know of course, and she tells him the mess he got himself into before leaving.
Later on, Jiro heads to a market to buy some fish where he is told that he is not allowed to purchase it. After leaving, He encounters a man named Monty outside who tells him to get into a car, where they bring him to The Summit to meet Bob.
After Bob suffocates a chef with hollandaise sauce for trying to make hollandaise for brunch, Bob asks Jiro to cook for him, and if it meets his standards, he’ll possibly put him in the inner ring, but Jiro declines. After being threatened, Jiro is sent outside, where the chef guards get killed by Roses henchmen.
Jiro is knocked out and brought to meet Rose, where she says that she and Jiro should team up to take down Bob. Jiro is apprehensive about it, so she sends him on his way with some free supplies. When Jiro gets back, he sees that the restaurant across the street has been burned down. After talking with the owner, Jiro decides to take matters into his own hands, brutally killing the ones responsible (including Monty), and sending Monty’s head to Bob. Bob takes this as a message from Rose and basically declares war against her.
So far, it’s different. It’s kind of silly, especially when a guy gets waterboarded to death by hollandaise, and a man gets his head cut off for soy sauce (which is crazy, and of course the show is probably not meant to be taken too seriously. Maybe a little, but it might be more of a bloody fun watch). It’s not bad so far, but it’s not incredible so far either. Honestly kind of want to see what happens next and how the story plays out (never read the graphic novel or heard about it until the show honestly).
