Episode six of Netflix’s hit series, Devil May Cry, looks deeper into Mary’s past as she recalls her relationship with her father. Since she was a child, she would remember her father’s obsessive studies in his office. As his studies consumed him, she would see him less each time. While Mary would peer through the keyhole to glimpse at him, she would find viles, books, and even a demon’s hand on display.
This route dives even deeper, looking into Mary’s childhood friend’s past. This flashback reveals that he was an orphan who loved the story, Alice in Wonderland. His time in the orphanage was not the best, as he was bullied and beaten by the other children. As he would look for help from the adults, they would turn a blind eye. The only thing that would keep him at peace was reading Alice in Wonderland.

One day, as he was reading his favorite book, a light appeared outside his window in the alleyway. As he moved in closer, this light became a portal. Thinking it was like the rabbit’s hole in his book, he stepped through. As he expected something magical, he was greeted by toxic gas and a large, lizard-like creature.
He ran for his life and found shelter in a tunnel from another being. This being was not human but treated the boy with kindness. They walked through the city, revealing an entire working community. This new friend introduced the boy to his family, and he was welcomed.

This new demon family became home to this boy. This sense of belonging aided his socialization on earth, allowing him to get closer to his friend Mary. While his time is now filled with friendship and love, his new family continues to get sick from the toxic gas in the atmosphere. Despite this, he and his new brother continue to explore until they come across a menacing castle that keeps other demons as slaves. On that day, his brother collapses as this poisonous gas begins to overcome his frail body.
During this time, Mary witnesses her parents fight, leading to her mother falling onto the floor. Mary rushes to her mother as her father injects himself with a syringe. Her father takes a demon-like form and throws Mary across the room. He begins to eat his wife as Mary watches in horror. Candles fall over during the struggle, enveloping Mary’s parents in flames.

As the boy’s brother dies, Mary watches her house burn to the ground. Both mature at that moment, having two separate, distinct opinions on demons. This experience leads Mary to DARKCOM, while the boy resides in the other dimension, excelling in creating technology.
The boy, now a man, creates a device that detects other natural, recurring portals. He and his family migrate to Earth to live in a world with a clean atmosphere. Despite their pure intentions, they are gunned down by DARKCOM. The organization and Mary continuously kill numerous innocent beings.
These two characters meet once more while he tries to offer passage for the demon migrants. Mary ceases the gunfire to question him, as he is the only human in the group. Before he could explain, a large, predatorial demon rushes through the portal and eats the surrounding demons. DARKCOM begins to gun down every demon in sight. Mary throws a bomb at the demons and orders her group to evacuate.
This bomb kills every migrant except the single human man. His cries turn to laughter, revealing his mind being corrupted by grief. As he stitches his wounds, he stitches a rabbit’s head onto his whole body. This reveals that this wasn’t just Mary’s childhood friend’s back story, but the White Rabbit’s.
This current episode gives even a stronger dynamic than previous episodes. Not only are morals in question for Mary, but also her entire trauma that led her to become a demon hunter. It’s now revealed that her oldest friend is now her enemy, separated by fate and situational circumstances. While both have different opinions of demons and humans, neither is right, as both demons and humans are shown to be murderous monsters. The only one standing between this parallel is now Dante, who is both half demon and half human. With stunning visuals and emotional weight, episode six marks a turning point in Devil May Cry, promising an even darker path ahead where loyalties will be tested, and the true nature of heroism—and monstrosity—comes into question. As these ideologies clash, audiences can expect Dante to emerge as a new hope in the chaos, while he must confront his own duality to forge a path forward for both worlds.
