Episode three of Devil May Cry takes a closer look into Mary’s past. As a child, she had an interest in the paranormal. This was an interest until it became all too real when her family encountered a demon on their way home after leaving the movie theater. Since that moment, Mary’s father took an obsessive interest after he almost lost his daughter to the demon. John didn’t just want to protect his daughter, and he wanted powers to do so.

In present times, Mary continues her mission by taking in Dante and Enzo. Their scientist quickly learned that Dante’s amulet was no ordinary necklace, and its destruction could lead to negative consequences. During further study, the amulet’s power begins to change.

Not only does this amulet hold special powers, but Dante is also seemingly extraordinary. Since he can heal wounds in seconds, Mary suggests that he is a demon. Because Dante holds Sparda’s key to the other dimension, he could be the son of Sparda.

While the transport truck is stuck in traffic, bombs are activated on the surrounding buildings. In the distance, the White Rabbit reveals himself, shooting a bazooka right at Mary’s unit.

A full-fledged battle starts, leaving most of Mary’s team severely wounded. Mary is forced to battle three high-level demons by herself, leaving the amulet unguarded. As the white Rabbit makes his way to the transport truck, audiences find that one of her new teammates is a double agent.

The White Rabbit combines the blue and red amulet, making the key whole again. While he escapes, he aches in pain, revealing a complex system underneath his clothes that suggests it’s what keeps him alive.

As soon as Dante breaks out of his shackles, the White Rabbit begins his escape. Dante rides after him as “Last Resort” by Papa Roach plays, playing into this series’ fun, 2000s theme. Numerous demons follow Dante, standing between him and the White Rabbit.

Meanwhile, Mary’s team regroups. Mary tracks Dante but finds he’s passed his chip’s location barrier. This chip quickly detonates, leaving Dante severely wounded as half of his face was crushed. The White Rabbit takes a moment to gaze at Dante, referring to him as the son of Sparda. At the same time, the shape-shifting demon creates a new plan by copying one of Mary’s teammates, making it a new agent for the White Rabbit.
Episode three of Netflix’s Devil May Cry serves as a crucial turning point in the series, unraveling character background while setting the stage for future confrontations. Despite some criticisms of the visuals and the series’ shift in focus from Dante to characters like White Rabbit and Mary, the writing clearly draws inspiration from the Devil May Cry 3 manga. This narrative approach adds complexity to the storyline, although it may disappoint viewers who expect a more Dante-centric arc. Nevertheless, the compelling plot developments continue to keep audiences engaged, making this one of Netflix’s more popular series.
