CBS wants to bring an exciting new series into The Big Bang Theory Universe! According to TVLine, the network has greenlit a Young Sheldon spinoff based on the new parents, Georgie and Mandy. The series is gearing up to receive a “direct-to-series” order at CBS.
The series would star and follow Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie, who is portrayed by Montana Jordan (The Big Bang Theory, The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter), and Mandy, Georgie’s bride-to-be, portrayed by Emily Osment (Hannah Montana, Cyber Bully) and would pick up where Young Sheldon concludes after its forthcoming seventh and last season premiering on Thursday, Feb.15.
The spinoff will have a twist, though. Moving from a single-camera format show like Young Sheldon, the series will be a multi-camera sitcom, as per TVLine, and will be shot in front of a live studio audience, much like The Big Bang Theory.
TVLine also reports that this project will be different from Max’s planned The Big Bang Theory spinoff, which is still in its “prenatal” stage, as creator Chuck Lorre (Mom, Disjointed) told TVLine last November. This project will have Lorre work closely with Steven Molaro (The Class, Freddie), co-creator of Young Sheldon and a The Big Bang Theory veteran, as well as Steve Holland (All That, Rules of Engagement), who is also the showrunner of Young Sheldon.
Deals for Osment and Jordan are still in the works, yet Warner Bros. and CBS are hoping to cement a 13-episode first season for the 2024-2025 TV season; this would allow the spinoff to premiere just months after Young Sheldon’s season finale set for May 16, as per TVLine There is no news on whether or not more Young Sheldon stars will be in the mix.
Suppose Young Sheldon’s story is continued in the spinoff. In that case, Sheldon will turn 14 during the seventh season, which is the age that, according to The Big Bang Theory’s storyline and as per TVLine, Sheldon moves from Medford, Texas, to Pasadena, Calif., to start obtaining his graduate degree at none other than the California Institue of Technology.
During the same year that Sheldon goes away, the newly engaged Georgie marries Mandy, and his and Sheldon’s father, George, also passes away, which would make the story of Young Sheldon a bittersweet end. Only time will tell where this series will go, although it could be up in the air as Holland told TVLine last year that “just because [something happened on Big Bang] doesn’t mean it’s a story [our narrator] has to tell.”
