‘Yellowstone’ Set to End as Taylor Sheridan Plots Out Franchise Extension with Matthew McConaughey

According to Deadline, Yellowstone, the hit Paramount+ neo-western drama series, is coming to a conclusion. However, fans of the top-rated show need not dismay, as Taylor Sheridan (Those Who Wish Me Dead, Mayor of Kingstown), the series’ co-creator and showrunner, has confirmed that he is currently plotting out a potential franchise extension with Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar, True Detective) set to lead the possible Dutton family spin-off series.

So far, it is unclear as to which of the Yellowstone cast members will transition over to the new McCounaghey-centered show, though it is expected that several of the series’ big stars are set to carry over. As reported by Deadline, complications involving Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves, The Bodyguard) and disagreements over shooting schedules are the major reasons for Yellowstone‘s conclusion.

In an exclusive interview with Deadline, a Paramount Network spokesperson said, “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

The new series will purportedly start on the traditional Paramount Network cable channel before moving to Paramount+ for exclusive streaming. It is currently unclear whether this McConaughey-led series will be set on the Dutton family ranch in Montana, as is the case with the prequel series 1883 and 1923, or elsewhere.

Sheridan also has two other limited series ideas on the drawing board with one show set in the 1940’s and the other in the 1960’s, both encompassing the struggle of hanging onto the titular Yellowstone family ranch. As of now, Sheridan has yet to confirm whether he will be proceeding with either potential project or not.
