Today, March 9, 2023, SHOWTIME has released the official trailer for the second season of the Emmy-nominated drama series Yellowjackets. This trailer also marks the debut of the cover of No Doubt’s 1995 classic song “Just A Girl” by Florence + The Machine, according to SHOWTIME’s press release.
“I’m such a huge fan of Yellowjackets and this era of music, and this song especially had a huge impact on me growing up, so I was thrilled to be asked to interpret it in a ‘deeply unsettling’ way for the show,” said Florence Welch about “Just A Girl” and Yellowjackets, via SHOWTIME’s press release. “We tried to really add some horror elements to this iconic song to fit the tone of the show. And as someone whose first musical love was pop punk and Gwen Stefani it was a dream job.”
The trailer for the second season depicts the adult characters experiencing a realization about something strange in the wilderness, carrying it back to their homes, and still grappling with it even after 25 years.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, the official logline for the second season of Yellowjackets reads: “Two months have passed since Shauna gave Jackie the cold shoulder— to disastrous results. In the face of their deepening hunger and fear, the tension among our Yellowjackets has only grown worse. The harsh conditions of winter are intensifying by the day, and the psyches of our survivors are deteriorating just as fast. Threatened by the darkness of the wilderness — and the haunting memories of it in the present — our former state champs will be forced to make impossible decisions. As they confront the horrible truth of what survival entails, the real nightmare for each of them will be to figure out who they are — and what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive.”
In its first season, Yellowjackets featured two different timelines. The first depicted the past, where a plane crash caused the high school soccer team known as the Yellowjackets to be stranded in the wilderness for 19 months in 1996. The second timeline was set in the present day and illustrated how the survivors coped with their experience.
Yellowjackets’ second season, as per The Hollywood Reporter, will continue to progress in both timelines while also exploring a new timeline that starts 19 months after the crash, wherein the young characters are rescued and begin to confront the emotional aftermath of their wilderness experience.
Yellowjackets stars Christina Ricci (Black Snake Moan, Casper), Tawny Cypress (Brooklyn’s Finest, Unforgettable), Melanie Lynskey (Heavenly Creatures, Castle Rock), and Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers, Camping). Joining the second season as regulars are Simone Kessell (Muru, Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Lauren Ambrose (Servant, Six Feet Under), along with Elijah Wood (Sin City, Lord of the Rings trilogy).
Starring in the second season are Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream, Laggies), Sophie Nélisse (The Book Thief, Pawn Sacrifice), Kevin Alves (Locke & Key, Degrassi: The Next Generation), Courtney Eaton (Mad Max: Fury Road, Gods of Egypt), Sophie Thatcher (Prospect, The Boogeyman), Steven Krueger (The Originals, Goosebumps), Warren Kole (Shades of Blue, Common Law), Liv Hewson (Drama World, Santa Clarita Diet), and Samantha Hanratty (Salem, Zoe Gone).
Yellowjackets will make its comeback to streaming with its second season on Friday, March 24, 2023, on SHOWTIME, and will make its debut on air on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at 9 pm EST. Florence + The Machine’s “Just A Girl” can be streamed here.
