Ten months after announcing his diagnosis with ALS, actor Eric Dane has died, according to Deadline. He was 53.
Known for his roles as Seattle Grace’s Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and the closeted father, Cal Jacobs, on HBO’s Euphoria, Deadline reports Dane came forward with his illness last April, stating he was “able to continue working” and “looking forward to returning” to the third season of Euphoria, which is set to premiere April 12.
According to Deadline, Dane’s family announced his passing in a statement to People, who first reported his death: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
The disease seemed to progress quickly, keeping Dane from appearing for a scheduled reunion with Grey’s costar, Jesse Williams (The Cabin in the Woods, The Butler), at the Emmys last September. Despite his condition, Dane continued working appearing in special episode of Brilliant Minds playing a fireman living with ALS. He also led last year’s Prime Video series Countdown, that filmed in 2024.
Dane was born November 9, 1972 in San Francisco and made his acting debut on Saved by the Bell in 1991, via Deadline. He would make future appearances on The Wonder Years, Married…with Children, Roseanne, and later Charmed and Las Vegas.
He shot to superstardom as Dr. Sloan on the longest-running medical drama from 2006 to 2012, according to Deadline. In addition to TV he appeared in movies, such as X-Men:The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Bad Boys Ride or Die, and Burlesque.
