According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Eric Dane (Kabul, Grey’s Anatomy) has announced that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. The 52-year-old shared the news in a statement to People Magazine on Thursday, expressing appreciation for the support he’s received from loved ones. “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he said.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. [It also] causes loss of muscle control.” There is no known cure for the disease, and it typically worsens with time.
Despite the diagnosis, Dane has made it clear that he plans to keep working. He told People that he intends to return to the set of HBO’s Euphoria next week, where production is currently underway for its third season. Dane portrays Cal Jacobs, a central and often controversial character in the series, known for his complex relationships and troubled backstory. “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week,” Dane said.
People reports that Dane also took a moment to request privacy for himself and his family as they come to terms with the diagnosis and the changes it will bring. He and his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart (Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, Nothing To Lose), share two teenage children.
In addition to his role on Euphoria, Dane is widely recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as “McSteamy,” on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, where he starred for six seasons from 2006 to 2012.
As stated by The Hollywood Reporter, Dane’s representatives have not released additional information at this time.
