Prime Video’s Invincible took on WonderCon in Anaheim, CA, this weekend with an exclusive panel for fans who attended. Fans got to see writer Simon Racioppa (The Boys Presents: Diabolical, Fangbone!), character designer Dou Hong (Young Justice, My Adventures With Superman), storyboard artist Shaun O’Neil (The Sea Beast, Gen: Lock), and Dan Duncan (Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy) director of the series.
Invincible debuted back in 2021 and since then has premiered three seasons with a confirmation of season four. The series follows teenager Mark Grayson, a descendant of a big-time superhero. Grayson quickly learns powers run in the family as he starts to develop some of his own. As he navigates his new heroic life, he learns his very enemy could be his own father. In addition to Yeun, some notable cast members are Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Can I Get A Witness) starring as Debbie Grayson, J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man) starring as Nolan Grayson, Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, Justified) starring as Cecil Stedman and Jason Mantzoukas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Lego Batman Movie) starring as Rex Splode.
The panel highlighted insights for the series and took a deep dive into scenes that took over the fanbase, such as the romance aspect of the show. The long-awaited romance was officially confirmed in season three with characters Mark, played by Steven Yeun (Mickey 17, Love Me), and Eve, played by Gillian Jacobs (The Box, The Bear). Panel mediator Dan Casey (Legendary Entertainment) asked the crew how introducing a romance like Mark and Eve changes the dynamic of the show and the viewer’s perspective.
Racioppa shared this with the panel, “Mark and Eve have been friends since episode two of season one, and this is the next step in their relationship and we’re going to keep on exploring that. It’s going to change the show, but the show is different in every episode. I hope the characters evolve and move along.”
The crew discussed what made the show gain high industry achievements, like the voice acting and storyboarding. Hong explained that everything is hand-drawn out and goes through a process before the show is animated. Hong shared that the art behind the scenes is what makes the show. A notable moment within the panel was O’Neil giving praise to the color supervisor of the show. O’Neil explained that the animation and design are crucial to the process, but the color is what brings the show to life, and the team dedicated to that is always hard working.
The animation department shared some of the design process and how they hire when it comes to a visually graphic show. O’Neil jokingly shared that no one should look at their search history, as looking at graphic photos is in their job description. Hong added that she told an animator to “make Invincible but his head needs to be twisted.” Despite the gruesome images, gaining that insight makes the animation all the more real and worth watching.
The panel left the audience with a teaser for season four as Racioppa shared that the character Damon will be back.
“If you’ve read the comics, there is still some stuff you still won’t know and you won’t expect,” Racioppa said as he shared that fans can expect new cast members for the series.
Invincible season four won’t be coming till 2026, but for now, tune into Prime Video to see what all the buzz is about and catch up on the past three seasons.
