Will Sharpe (Flowers, Giri/Haji, Defending the Guilty), the White Lotus alum, has been cast for the character of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the famous musical genius, in the new Sky original limited show, named Amadeus, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will have Julian Farino (The Oranges, Bryon, Marvellous) as director and Joe Barton (Giri/Haji, Black Doves, The Lazarus Project) as the screenplay writer. Two Cities Television, in collaboration with Sky Studios, will be producing the limited series.
This show, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is a remake of the Peter Shaffer’s (Midsomer Murders, Television Theater, Equus) 1979 stage play, Amadeus, as now it will be completely rewritten by Farino and Barton. Amadeus was an award-winning play that toured across London and New York. This play has inspired, in the following year, the creation of Milos Forman’s (Goya’s Ghosts, Man on the Moon, Valmont) 1984 film adaptation.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this Sky original limited series will be set in 18th century Vienna and will focus on a rivalry between young Mozart and composer Antonio Salieri, which will unleash an intricate story of ambition and jealousy.
The description given by the series’ producer, via The Hollywood Reporter, states: “Recently unemployed and without the management of his father, Amadeus finds an unlikely ally in a young singer who will become his wife, fiery Constanze Weber Mozart. Her connections help bring him into the orbit of the court composer Antonio Salieri, setting the three of them on a collision course that will ultimately define their lives and their legacies for years to come.”
Executive producers, according to The Hollywood Reporter, are Megan Spanjian (The Mist, Spy Kids: Mission Critical, and Waco), Paul Gilbert (The Spider’s Web: Britain’s Second Empire, Vibrato, Blood, Frets and Tears) Sharpe, Stephen Wright (Coffee and Cigarettes, Reservoir Dogs, A Steven Wright Special), Michael Jackson (Trailer Park Boys, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, The Love Machine), and Farino. Alongside Farino, Alice Seabright (Chloe, End-O, Pregnant Pause) will be a director for the series. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution is taking care of international sales for the show.
This show is set to begin production this year, and it will be streaming on Sky.
