‘Westworld’ Showrunners Tease Season 2 Details, Confirm Return of Popular Characters

Ever since Westworld completed its first season run on television back in 2016, HBO has kept details concerning season 2 largely under wraps. Fans still have little to no idea what to expect from the show’s upcoming episodes, even after the exciting trailer that premiered during Super Bowl Sunday in Februrary.

But with Westworld’s return to television nearly a month away, series showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have finally decided to begin teasing season 2 secrets. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the two confirmed that a series of important supporting characters would be coming back for season 2.

Popular characters like Elsie Hughes (played by Shannon Woodward), Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson), Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman), Peter Abernathy (Louis Herthum), and Clementine Pennyfeather (Angela Sarafyan).

Park creator Robert Ford will also be making a comeback as well. However, Nolan and Joy did not say that Hopkins would return for the role; instead, a younger actor will play Ford in flashbacks. Actors Ben Barnes (Logan on the series) and Jimmi Simpson (William) both confirmed their return for season 2 last year.

With all of these returning characters, season 2 is sure to be filled with surprises – and not just for fans at home. Nolan spoke on some of the footage shown in Westworld’s Super Bowl trailer, and revealed that a large part of season 2 will involve Bernard trying to piece the park back together after the events of season 1.

But it won’t be an easy task. “There is an agenda [in the park] that Delos has undertaken for a very long time,” Nolan said. Uncovering this agenda will cause Bernard to find many surprises along his season 2 journey.

Addressing one of the shots in the Super Bowl trailer that shows Bernard being ambushed by a mysterious white robot, Nolan explained, “As Bernard is making his way through the wreckage of the fallout from the first season, he’s discovering things about the park that even he doesn’t know and coming upon creatures like the drone host.”

Nolan and Joy’s reveals certainly only scratched the surface of what fans can expect from season 2, which means the next installment of episodes might even out-do the series’ wild ride of a first season.

Westworld season 2 premieres April 22 on HBO.
