A major change is coming to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
The events of this week’s episode will have lasting effects on Wentworth Miller’s character, Leonard Snart, also known as Captain Cold. Wentworth Miller will, in fact, be leaving DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as a regular character.
This does not mean that we have seen the last of Captain Cold and his horrible puns. In fact, Wentworth Miller recently signed a new contract with Greg Berlanti’s CW superhero shows which will allow him the freedom to reprise his role as Snart on several DC shows at the same time.
And apparently this was the plan all along. Berlanti, who is the co-creator and executive producer for Arrow, Flash, Legends, and Supergirl, revealed to Deadline that Miller’s arc on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow was never intended to be a regular role past the first season. “We always knew that he wouldn’t be a permanent member of The Waverider. We also knew we loved him on the show and all the shows, Flash as well.”
Despite Miller not having a long-term contract, Berlanti wanted to make sure the character Captain Cold would be sticking around to continue to appear in the DC universe he has created on the CW. “What it really emulates to us is the comic books themselves where there really are a cast of characters,” Berlanti said. Even though Miller “won’t be part of the team of Legends on board of The Waverider next year, he will have a very active role on the show.”
In addition to being a regular this season on Legends, Miller has also been filming the Prison Break follow-up series.
Miller is the first actor to have a contract of this type which is “not applicable to just one show,” Berlanti said. “In success we hope to continue with other characters finding their way across all the shows.”
For fans of Captain Cold, Miller’s departure as a series regular is disappointing. But furthermore, his departure is foreboding that there may be other exits from the crew of The Waverider. Berlanti revealed that “Every year for this show people should expect a new adventure. There will be new teammates, a new big bad. Mixing and matching things is part of the fun of the show.”
Recently the DC universe on the CW expanded to include a female superhero. It was announced this week that Supergirl would be finding new home on the CW with the other DC universe shows. With Miller’s new contract, maybe he’ll even show up in National City.
