‘Watchmen’ Crew Weighs In On Potential Season 2

According to comicbook.com, the cast and crew responsible for HBO’s new hit show, Watchmen, have given their own opinions on whether or not a season 2 is in the cards. Damon Lindelof has been adamant in his claims that Watchmen hadn’t been planned beyond a first season. At one point, Lindelof had even suggested the possibility that if the show does return for a second season, he’d entertain the possibility of passing the Watchmen mantle down to someone else. “It’s not my story, right? I appropriated it,” Lindelof had once said in an October interview with Variety. “And so the idea that someone else could come along and do another season of Watchmen, that’s really exciting to me.”

With the season coming to its anticipated finale, Lindelof has once again addressed the future of Watchmen, one that fans hope doesn’t come to an end this Sunday.

“I am deeply, profoundly appreciative for how well received the season has been up until now, and I don’t want to feel ungrateful, but I still don’t have any inclination whatsoever to continue the story, and that is largely and almost exclusively based on the fact that I don’t have an idea. If I’m going to be involved in anymore Watchmen, I should be able to answer the questions why, and why now, and the answers to those questions shouldn’t be, ‘Well, that’s what you do, because the first one was good.”

Lindelof later went on to say, “I’m not saying there shouldn’t be a second season of Watchmen, and I’m not even saying that season shouldn’t feature some of the characters in this season of Watchmen. I just don’t know what it should be.”

Regina King, who stars in HBO’s Watchmen adaptation, gave a more emphatic, “Absolutely,” when asked if she’d want to return for a second season. Stephen Williams, who’s directed several episodes of Watchmen, said of his possible return, “I’m still kind of recuperating from production. I just think it’s gonna take time to say what Season 2 would be.”

It’s easy to see why the question of a season 2 has become a recurring theme in Lindelof’s interviews. Since its debut, Watchmen has become a word of mouth phenomenon. Comicbook.com reported that it draws 7 million viewers across all streaming platforms weekly, and the latest episode of Watchmen drew the highest initial live ratings of the season with a 0.822, which may be a strong indicator of the enthusiasm for the season finale.

Watchmen’s season finale will air on HBO on Sunday the 15th, at its regularly scheduled time at 8 PM.
