War Erupts In The Official Trailer for HBO’s Third Season Of ‘His Dark Materials’

After releasing an initial teaser, HBO has released new trailer for its upcoming fantasy drama series, His Dark Materials. Based on the trilogy of books by author Philip Pullman (Lyra’s Oxford, The Secret Commonwealth) the third season will conclude the series. View the exclusive trailer below.

The trailer highlights various factions combining their forces in preparation for war, just as an ancient prophecy may come to pass that will change the world forever. The show stars Dafne Keen (Logan, The Refugees) as Lyra, a young girl who becomes embroiled in a secret conspiracy involving the all-powerful religious entity, the Magistrate. Along the way, she discovers how both her parents, James McAvoy’s (X-Men: First Class, Split) Lord Asriel and Ruth Wilson’s (Oslo, Luther) Mrs. Coulter, stand on opposite sides of the growing conflict. In her pursuit of the truth, she befriends Amir Wilson’s (The Letter to the King, The Secret Garden) Will, a young man who wields a knife that opens doors to other worlds. Soon the two find themselves at the center of something much bigger than just the abolition of the Magistrate’s reign.

Season three will see Asriel recruit forces – both of this world and the next – to join his campaign to end the Magistrate once and for all. And as battlelines are drawn, he will find a new ally in his estranged lover, Mrs. Coulter, as the Magistrate has set to capture their daughter dead or alive. Meanwhile, Lyra and Will venture to strange worlds, including the Land of the Dead, as Lyra embraces her role in a century-old prophecy that will upend the world as they know it.

Each season of the show has been based on one of the three books in Pullman’s saga: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and finally, The Amber Spyglass.

The final season of His Dark Materials premieres Monday, December 5 on HBO and HBO Max.
