On April 16, the season five premiere of horror drama Van Helsing airs on SyFy, kicking off the show’s final season on the network, as reported by TV Line. Season five is reportedly comprised of thirteen hour-long episodes which will culminate in momentous clash between the titular family of vampire slayers and The Dark One (Tricia Helfer, Lucifer), according to Deadline. In advance of the premiere, executive producer Jonathan Lloyd Walker (Wu Assassins) made Twitter post that features what is allegedly a piece of original concept art. Walker claims that the image will inform a key moment in season five.
Van Helsing season five will introduce a handful of new characters to the series’ intricate world. Two new cast members are playing vampires. Ali Liebert (Bomb Girls) portrays Nina, whose past is reportedly connected to that of vampire-turned-human Julius (Aleks Paunovic, The 100), SyFy Wire reports. Croatian actor Steve Bacic (The Guard) joins the cast as blood-sucking character who wears animals pelts and is known simply as The Father, as reported by Deadline.
New addition Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy), meanwhile, plays Count Dalibor, the husband of Olivia Von Dracula, in scenes that are allegedly set in the distant past in Transylvania, via Coates’s Nerd Alert News interview. Helfer hinted that her character has stunt-heavy scene with Dalibor during the fan Q&A she conducted via SyFy’s Instagram story.
The sequences in Transylvania allegedly present a new origin story for Dracula and the Van Helsings, according to SyFy Wire. In her Hidden Remote interview, Helfer clarified that those scenes set centuries before the series’ beginning populate the first three episodes of season five, but chose not to divulge the way in which the program re-orients itself in the modern era. “It sets up the rest of the season. We obviously don’t stay there. We don’t stay in that time period. I cannot tell you how or why that happens… because that would be spoiler. But we ultimately end up back in current time and I just think it’s going to be a treat for the fans,” Helfer announced, via Hidden Remote.
Jonathan Scarfe (Hell on Wheels), who plays military man Axel Miller and directs several episodes in season five, sees the series finale as an altogether satisfying one. “You can walk away going, ‘Right, there was beginning, middle and end to that story,’ which I love. I think that shows that are lucky enough to have that opportunity are better for it,” he stated, via Monsters and Critics.
“Past Tense,” the first episode in Van Helsing‘s fifth and final season, arrives on SyFy on April 16 at 10 P.M. Eastern, via TV Line.
